(AP) ? The U.S. is heaping new pressure on Russia to change course and support international action in Syria, warning that intransigence by Moscow may lead to open civil war that could spill across the Middle East with devastating effects.

Speaking on Russia's doorstep in Denmark, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton derided the Russian government for continuing to support Syrian President Bashar Assad, even after last week's massacre of more than 100 people in the town of Houla. In pointed remarks Thursday, she said Russia's position "is going to help contribute to a civil war" and rejected Russian officials' insistence that their stance actually is helping to ease the crisis.

On the first stop of a European tour, Clinton said Russia and China would have to be on board before the U.S. and other nations might engage in what could become a protracted conflict in support of a disorganized rebel force.

Russia, along with China, has twice vetoed U.N. Security Council sanctions against Syria. Russia is Syria's closest ally other than isolated Iran, and Clinton said that without its support the international community is essentially frozen from taking concrete steps to end the violence.

"The Russians keep telling us they want to do everything they can to avoid a civil war because they believe that the violence would be catastrophic," Clinton said, noting that they are "vociferous in their claim that they are providing a stabilizing influence."

"I reject that," she said, complaining that in fact Russia is propping up Assad as his government continues a brutal, 15-month crackdown on dissent in which some 13,000 people have died.

A day earlier, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough said the U.S. is lobbying Russia to distance itself from its ally Syria and to apply pressure on Assad to leave office. A negotiated exit similar to one the U.S. helped broker for Yemen's longtime leader is one possibility, McDonough said, but he offered little optimism that the arguments are gaining traction.

The Obama administration has called on Assad to step down and clear the way for a political transition. But mindful of a war-weary American public, it has stopped short of advocating direct U.S. military engagement in the country and stressed the need for diplomacy, particularly with Moscow, which continues to sell weapons and provide political support to Assad.

In Washington, despite revulsion over the Houla massacre, officials said the administration remains deeply concerned about the possible consequences of military action. But as the violence continues, they acknowledge that planning for some sort of intervention is under way.

Two Western diplomats told The Associated Press that top U.S. and British commanders and intelligence officers visited the northern Jordanian city of Ramtha recently and toured the area along the Jordan-Syria border to assess the possibility of a limited land attack. But it was decided that air attacks would be best, considering the mostly bushy terrain and climate conditions, the diplomats said.

Still, Clinton told reporters after meeting top officials in Denmark, a key contributor to last year's NATO-led mission against Moammar Gadhafi in Libya that "we're nowhere near putting together any type of coalition other than to alleviate the suffering."

"We are working very hard to focus the efforts of those, like Denmark and the United States, who are appalled by what is going on, to win over those who still support the regime, both inside and outside of Syria."

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in remarks to reporters traveling with him Thursday to a conference in Singapore, said he does not see the U.S. taking military action in Syria without the backing of a U.N. Security Council resolution.

"No, I cannot envision that," Panetta said when asked about military action without U.N. backing. Still he said that all options remain on the table and that the Pentagon is planning for "any contingency."

At the White House, press secretary Jay Carney was blunt in describing the risks posed by the protracted standoff with Assad.

"The longer this goes on, the longer that Assad and his thugs are allowed to brutally murder the Syrian people, the more likely it becomes a sectarian civil war, the more likely that it spills over Syrian borders," Carney said. He listed another risk, of a "proxy war" with Iran backing Assad and other outside nations or forces backing insurgent factions.

The prospect of such a proxy war or a sectarian conflict along the lines of Lebanon is a major reason the United States is leery of arming the Syrian rebels or edging toward direct military involvement, though U.S. officials rarely say so.

Jordan has concerns about its territory, the Turks worry over Kurdish terrorists operating from inside Syria and neighboring Lebanon's is still struggling to emerge from decades of sectarian civil war and political instability.

Still, Moscow's calculus doesn't appear to be changing. Russia did begin inching away from Assad, particularly after the massacre in which dozens of women and children were among those shot at close range by pro-regime gunmen. And Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this week that while both sides are to blame, Assad "bears the main responsibility for what is going on."

However, he also said the Houla massacre must not be a pretext to push for military intervention from outside. Instead, he urged all sides to focus on U.N. mediator Kofi Annan's peace plan, which by all accounts has failed to stem the violence.

Other than Russian opposition, there are other hurdles to armed intervention, U.S. officials said.

Clinton said Assad's foes lack the unity that the anti-Gadhafi camp eventually rallied in Libya. Syria's professional military and substantial air defenses also would make intervening far more difficult. And whereas in Libya the U.S. was able to count on the support of Gulf countries in monitoring a no-fly zone and carrying out some airstrikes, the Arab League is split on whether military options should be entertained in Syria.

"We know it could actually get much worse than it is," Clinton said. "We are trying to prevent that." Clinton underscored her support for the U.N. mediation effort, which she said had had some positive results even though none of its six points have been achieved. She stressed that U.N. observers have performed two important functions.

"In many of the areas where they are present, violence has gone down," Clinton said. "And they serve as independent observers, the eyes of the world if you will, in reporting back when terrible events like the recent massacre occur. They've tried to cut through the clutter and disinformation coming from the Syrian government."

She spoke as activists reported more shelling in the central Houla area.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups said Thursday's shelling of Houla was mostly by heavy machine guns. Survivors of last week's massacre blamed pro-regime gunmen for the close-range shooting of civilians in their homes, though the government denied the involvement of its troops.

Carney said the U.S. can't deal with Syria by itself.

"There is no question that as mighty as the United States is, that we cannot end all atrocities around the globe," Carney said.

The United States must approach world problems with an eye to its own national security interests and to what is possible to achieve, Carney said, while "making sure you're not taking actions that create unintended consequences that are bad for the United States and bad, in some cases, for the very people you're trying to help."

How To Choose A Camping Sleeping Bag | Travel and Leisure

Sleeping bags are important part of the camping journey. It is important to have a good down sleeping bag in a camping trip to rest comfortably after a long and tiring day of hiking and other activities. When shopping for a bag you need to always choose one which will provide you warmth in chilly nights, convenience in rough surface and most importantly has the ability to supply you a god night?s rest. Nevertheless, there are two major kinds available which includes down or synthetic. Both have their own pros and cons and are useful in different circumstances.

Given the types of material the bags are made off, down bags are more costly of the two types. However, this bag offers you the highest quality. The latter one which is the synthetic one is less likely to offer the warm pillow-like comfort of down. The down sleeping bags have the advantage of packing down into a small size and when dry are warm and light to carry. Similarly, synthetic sleeping bags are relatively easy to dry if subjected to wet conditions and will not lose all warmth if they are damp. In addition purchasing a synthetic bag does not require a major investment as they are cheaper in price.

Another feature you must consider while choosing a sleeping bag is its shape. Here also we are able to find two major types which includes tapered and semi-rectangular. Useful in hot climate and easy to undo are the best characteristics of semi-rectangular design. Some may even be thrown over in a duvet style if preferred. The tapered shape is perfect for the winter camping or cold weather camping. This shape may not fully unzip and becomes narrower toward the bottom. The characteristic of tapered bag that is less space to heat helps to keep the bag warmer in cold temperature.

Besides the material bags are made off and their shapes, you must also bear in mind the discomfort coldness may cause you. It?s more than recommended to consider the conditions in which you might find your self. It is always a great idea purchasing a bag relatively warm, as weather might not always be on your side.

With these general ideas in mind make your purchase cautiously and wisely. Always note the temperature rating provided, and look at all your options considering the optimum conditions in which you rest. This way you may be well rested at whatever the circumstances.

Keeping the children warm on the camping trips is essential as cold children moan and complain which could ruin your journey. So, it is much better to buy the disney sleeping bags for kids if you would like to have a best camping experience together with your kids.

Lian-Li designs a moving train PC case, makes plugging in a challenge (video)

Image

Lian-Li is a fan of odd-looking PC cases, but the boxes have usually had a tendency to remain stationary. The CK-101 takes away that one certainty: the design stuffs a fully functioning PC case with hard drive bays, a slim optical drive and USB 3.0 ports into an on-the-move model of a steam engine train. There's more than a few questions about how it works -- including whether or not it needs a battery to stay rolling, and just what's generating the 'steam' -- but it's already apparent from the video (below) that wired peripherals won't be much fun if you're chasing your computer down the tracks. There's a chance that Lian-Li will be selling a considerably more fixed-in-place version; we'll know more when the CK-101 is shown off at Computex in early June, where there will also be a show-specific, SUV-like Q15 case to sate your appetite for very literal car computers.

Obama on the defensive on government spending, debt

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Government spending and debt are emerging as a campaign tug-of-war, with Mitt Romney blaming President Barack Obama for a "prairie fire of debt" and Obama calling the charge a "cow pie of distortion." House Speaker John Boehner is talking about a debt ceiling that is still more than eight months away.

What gives? In a word, polling.

The American public is growing increasingly distressed about government spending and high budgets. The issue now ranks as high on the worry scale as lack of jobs. And it worked well for Republicans in 2010, who galvanized voters with ads and flyers that drew attention to government red ink and took back control of the U.S. House after four years of Democratic rule.

Republicans are looking for that magic again.

Romney has maintained a drumbeat of criticism over Obama's handling of federal spending and the national debt in recent weeks, forcing the president on the defensive on an issue where public opinion is stacked against him.

In Iowa earlier this month, Romney said a "prairie fire of debt" was sweeping across the nation, threatening the country's future. He accused Obama of inflating the debt that he had pledged to reduce and ballooning the federal budget deficit with the 2009 economic stimulus and 2010 health care bill after saying he would cut it sharply.

Obama, in campaign events in Colorado, California and Iowa this week, argued that federal spending had slowed to rates not seen in decades after he inherited a $1 trillion large debt and later pushed for $2 trillion in spending cuts. The president pointed to Romney's tax proposal, saying it would give millionaires tax cuts at the expense of the debt.

Obama called Romney's claims a "cow pie of distortion" and would saddle the debt with $5 trillion in new tax cuts, likening it to trying to put out "a prairie fire with some gasoline."

"What happens is, the Republicans run up the tab, and then we're sitting there and they've left the restaurant," Obama said at a campaign event in Des Moines. "And then they point and (say), 'Why did you order all those steaks and martinis?"'

Obama's defensive crouch on debt and spending reflect a hard reality: Polls consistently show voters, including sought-after independents, placing more trust in Romney to handle the massive debt.

The nation's economy remains a focal point for voters but many remain concerned that years of heavy federal spending on guns and butter could leave the U.S. in a similar position as Greece and other European nations grappling with massive debt.

A Gallup/USA Today poll conducted May 10-13 found that overall, 82 percent of Americans called the "federal budget deficit and debt" extremely or very important, a level of interest comparable to unemployment. The same poll found Romney with a broad advantage on handling the budget deficit and debt, with 54 percent saying he would do a better job handling it compared with 39 percent who chose Obama.

The results mirrored an April Washington Post/ABC News poll, which found 51 percent of Americans sided with Romney on handling the federal budget deficit, compared with 38 percent for Obama. Among independents, 60 percent preferred Romney while 29 percent thought Obama would do a better job handling it.

The White House has tried to respond. Traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., White House press secretary Jay Carney cited an analysis by MarketWatch that said spending under Obama had grown more slowly than any president since Dwight Eisenhower.

A few hours later, Obama picked up on the piece, telling donors in Denver that his work to pay down the federal debt in a "balanced and responsible" way was "starting to appear in places - real liberal outlets like The Wall Street Journal - since I've been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years." MarketWatch is published by Dow Jones & Co., which also publishes The Wall Street Journal.

Yet, Obama's budget stewardship is open to interpretation. The debt now stands at $15.7 trillion, compared to $10.6 trillion on his inauguration day. On a dollar basis, that's the biggest ever jump in the debt. How much the debt has grown can also be measures as a percentage of what he inherited. By that measure, the debt has increased by half during the three-and-a-half year Obama administration. During President Ronald Reagan's eight-year administration, the debt nearly tripled, from about $910 billion to more than $2.6 trillion.

Still, much of the increase during Obama's tenure has been a consequence of the recession. In a poor economy, government spending increases automatically because more Americans become eligible for food stamps, unemployment assistance and Medicaid. Also, a poor economy leads to unemployment which cuts into tax revenue. As a result, deficits are inevitable as more money goes out and less comes in.

To be sure, Obama pushed through a stimulus package that cost more than $800 billion and he and President George Bush both approved spending of the $700 billion bank bailout in 2008 and 2009. But those costs are not recurrent.

"It's important to understand the reason why the debt went up by so much," said Robert Bixby of the budget watchdog group The Concord Coalition. "We certainly do have a very serious long-term debt problem in the country. We have an underlying structural imbalance between what we are promising, mostly in entitlement benefits, and what we're willing to pay for in taxes. But in the short-term there are a lot of factors that are pushing the debt up that aren't related to fiscal policy."

Add to the mix Boehner, who has said when Congress is asked to raise the nation's borrowing cap after the election, he will insist on spending cuts to offset the increase. Democratic leaders call it an irresponsible course of action, noting that the gridlock over the debt ceiling last year caused a downgrading of the U.S. government's credit rating.

All of this is aimed at unaligned, independent voters.

In turning attention to debt, Republicans are tapping a winning issue they deployed in congressional races two years ago. In October of 2010, Republican pollster Wes Anderson said, congressional campaigns shifted "away from jobs and economy to government taking us over the cliff." The emphasis proved to be a success at the ballot box.

These days, the economy remains the preeminent issue in voters' minds, but Anderson says middle-of-the-road votes are the targets of the big government message.

"The middle is angry about where we are at and they really see two villains on this stage, this play has two antagonists. Both of them are big," said Anderson, who is working on congressional and statewide political campaigns in several states that are presidential battlegrounds. "One is big business, big Wall Street, big insurance, big oil, just big, abusing the middle class, abusing small businesses, abusing the taxpayer. The other is big government - big government wildly running up massive deficits and debt which abuse the taxpayer, the middle class and small business."

Independent voters, he said, "hold both of those central tenets to be true."

Clove Technology experiencing stock delays on Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S III

Sad news breaking this afternoon for anyone in the UK -- or abroad if you just couldn't wait -- that has pre-ordered a new Samsung Galaxy S III from Clove Technology. The latest update from the retailer has put the shipping dates back for both white and blue versions of the latest Samsung flagship.

If you've ordered a white one, the delay is less. Instead of shipping on May 30, they will now begin shipping the following day, June 1, instead. It's the Pebble Blue variant that has a slight ring of alarm bells around it. But only slight.

The first stock is now expected to arrive at Clove from June 5. The uneasy part, is that this date is still to be confirmed.

For now, lets try not to panic too much. Yes, there have been rumors all over the interwebs about issues with the Pebble Blue Galaxy S III, and subsequent delays because of said rumored issues. At the moment, it is only Clove that have published details of any stock delays.

We've reached out to our friends over at Clove to see if we can dig out some more details on this one. But, in the UK it's now out of office hours, so we may have to wait until morning. Sit tight folks.

Update: It seems that similar delays are being experienced over at HandTec as well. They're on track for a May 31 release of the white version, but have no date available for the Pebble Blue. ?Thanks plh36!

The?Opportunity rover?was perched at the western edge of Mars' Endeavour Crater when it captured the image. Endeavour is about 14 miles (22 kilometers) wide, and Opportunity has been exploring the many outcrops along its rim since August 2011.

The photo is a mosaic composed of images taken with Opportunity's panoramic camera between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Mars time, mostly on March 9, NASA officials said. The scene is presented in false color to highlight differences in materials, such as the dark dunes on Endeavour's floor.

Opportunity just started moving?again two weeks ago, after spending more than four months at a site along Endeavour's rim called Greeley Haven. The rover sat out the harsh Martian winter at the site, whose tilt allowed Opportunity to angle its solar panels toward the low-hanging sun.

While Opportunity was motionless for a long stretch, it was not hibernating. The robot continued to investigate nearby rocks at Greeley Haven, and scientists analyzed radio signals from the stationary rover to study Mars' interior.

Opportunity and its twin, Spirit, landed on Mars in January 2004. The six-wheeled, golf-cart-size rovers were originally tasked with three-month missions to look for signs of past water activity on Mars.

Both robots delivered from their separate landing sites, finding lots of evidence that the Red Planet was once a much wetter, warmer place. And then they just kept going, far beyond their warranties.

Spirit went silent in March 2010 after failing to get into a good position to wait out the Martian winter, and the rover teamdeclared the Mars rover dead?last year. But Opportunity is still going strong, continuing to add to the 21.4 miles (34.4 km) it has driven to date on the Martian surface.

Opportunity will soon have company on the Red Planet. NASA's newest Mars rover, the 1-ton Curiosity, is slated to land on the night of Aug. 5. The car-size Curiosity's main goal is to assess whether its landing site is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life.

Need Help With Personal Finance? Try These Great Tips ? open ...

Dealing with one?s personal finances is one of the hardest aspects of life. However, with some helpful advice, learning how to deal with your finances can be simple. The following article is going to provide you with this advice and when used properly, you will find your whole financial situation improved.

A great personal finance tip is to make sure you?re not being underpaid at the job you?re working at. A lot of people are way overqualified for the job they?re working at and could be potentially making much more money. Know your market worth so that you can get the best job.

Make sure to always have enough cash on hand in case of an emergency. It is recommended that you have enough in your savings account to cover six to nine months worth of expenses. That way you will be covered in the event that you lose your job or you become injured.

Never share your personal information with anyone, as this can make it much easier for someone to hack your accounts or to commit identity fraud. Even if you trust someone, they may not be very careful in recording your login information and make it easier for a criminal to hack into your account.

Try saving money on your different insurance policies. You should be insured for anything that is likely to happen, but look for ways to reduce your premiums. Shop around, find out if you are eligible for discounts and review your policies regularly to make sure they are still adapted to your needs.

Get a piggy bank and put a few dollars in it every week and forget about it. Make that your fun money. After a few months, use it to have a nice, fun night out. That way, you won?t feel guilty about having a night of entertainment because the money was already removed from your budget and accounted for.

Do research as to whether it is more affordable to repair or to replace an appliance or other items that you own. Very often, it is not as obvious as you think. Sometimes, it is more affordable to replace your car or washer than to fix it. Every once in a while, all you need is a part.

When you use a credit card, pay the balance in full each month, if at all possible. This allows you the convenience of using a credit card, but prevents you from incurring interest and fees. When you pay interest on credit card purchases, in the long run, you are actually paying more for the items that you purchase.

Before you make an investment, take the time to meet with a financial planner and develop an investment policy statement. A good statement will help you avoid the pitfalls of investing, and will help you make investment choices that are right for you. If you?re educated about investing, you may be able to put together a statement on your own.

Consider driving a used car instead of borrowing money to buy a new car. If you buy a new car, you will be paying a lot of interest. It is not worth the interest for the amount of money you will be losing on the value of the vehicle as soon as it leaves the lot!

If you are hoping to refinance your mortgage, make sure that your credit is in good shape before you do so. Pay your credit card bills on time, and check your credit report for any errors or issues. Trying to refinance a mortgage with bad credit can be a difficult and costly process.

One important goal of your personal finance strategy should be a commitment to saving for your financial future. The earlier you begin to save for a secure financial future, the better. Regular deductions from your paycheck can be deposited directly into a savings account at your bank. Even a small amount can make a big difference in the long term.

Gas prices can hurt any budget. Constantly be on the lookout for the cheapest station in your area. Stores can vary by several cents, which makes a big difference when you are filling up. Maximize your fuel consumption by making sure your tires have air, following the speed limit, and keeping your car free of junk that may be weighing it down.

When it comes to credit scores, what you don?t know can really hurt you. Be sure to get a copy of your credit report every six months and study it carefully, looking for errors. It is up to you to find mistakes and request to have them deleted from your credit report. Look for such things as, old collections accounts that have been paid, as well as, incorrect information.

As was stated in the first paragraph of this article, having the ability to properly manage your personal finances is extremely important. Without the right knowledge, you will waste tons of cash, and miss out on many money making opportunities. Take advantage of the tips in this article to secure your financial health and improve your life.

Annette's websites of the week

Love Food Hate Waste- This week I?ve been sharing some of my favourite veggie recipes for National Vegetarian Week. On the search for veggie dishes I visited the Love Food Hate Waste website which is packed full of handy ways to prevent food and drink waste with top tips and fantastic recipes that use up food you might have otherwise thrown away.

As someone who really enjoys food I?m conscious about trying to get the most out of my groceries so LFHW?s website is perfect for me. I like the recipe search tool which uses categories according to the ingredients you have and the type of meal you want to make- a quick breakfast, light lunch or a vegetarian evening meal etc?

Love Food Hate Waste Website

Love Food Hate Waste

You?ll discover a huge variety of beautiful dishes which can be made out of pantry essentials and leftover, helping you save money and use all the delicious ingredients that you bought at the supermarket/grocers.

Also check out LFHW?s tips on ways to make sure you don?t over stock your fridge and how to control the amount of food you?re cooking. I?ve found the ?Perfect Portions? tool really helpful for ingredients such as pasta and rice- I always make more than I need.

Royal Horticultural Society- This week Royal Horticultural Society have been busy hosting the annual Chelsea Flower Show and it?s fair to say that they chose the perfect week as the sun hasn?t stopped shining.

I wrote a blog earlier in the week about my favourite gardens featured at this year?s show and since the RHS have handed out awards to their favourite gardens and gardeners. You can view all of the winners and nominee at the Chelsea Flower Show 2012 section of RHS website along with a host of photographs of the gardens and video footage from this year?s event.

Whilst at www.rhs.org.uk ?I also had a nosey around the site?s gardening section which has lots of information about how to tend your garden during the summer months. Including how to maintain a grow your own veggie patch, which is handy to read if your currently growing your own veggie, fruit and herbs like me.

This weekend is set to be a scorcher so why not try and get your grandchildren to help you around the garden. If they aren?t convinced read RHS?s top tips on gardening for the whole family where you?ll find fun garden tips aimed at children, but don?t forget the sunscreen.

Olympic Torch Relay- As I?m sure you already know the Olympic Torch Relay began its tour of the UK last weekend. The torch has already travelled from Land?s End to Worcester and is now en route to Cardiff before it tours Wales.

Throughout it?s week- long journey various famous people from the world of sport have carried the flame including Darren Campbell, Sharon Davies, Zara Phillips and Didier Drogba. Along with these sports personality?s people from local communities have also had the opportunity to carry the flame, which was saluted by two elephants at West midlands Safari Park yesterday.

BBC Olympic Torch Relay

As the torch travels most people want to keep track of its whereabouts, including me. I?ve been tracking the torch via BBC News who has created a fantastic Torch Relay landing page that gives up to date coverage of the relay.

From here you can view a live video stream or read up to date reports of what?s happening on the relay. The page also includes an interactive map with the route highlighted and estimated times of arrival, plus pictures from the relay so far. A great resource which I?m sure I?ll be glued to next week when the torch arrived in Staffordshire.

(AP) ? The anniversary of the day 6-year-old Etan Patz vanished on his way to school dawned with his suspected killer in police custody, but it ended with a muddled portrait of the man who confessed to strangling the little boy and dumping his body in the trash.

A former neighbor who knew Pedro Hernandez as a teenager says he was someone you wouldn't want to cross ? a reserved but "pent-up" young man. But the pastor of his church says Hernandez, now 51, is simply a shy and timid man who faithfully attends Sunday services.

Now on suicide watch at Bellevue Hospital, Hernandez was arraigned Friday via video link from a hospital ward on a charge of murder. His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the judge that Hernandez is bipolar, schizophrenic and has a "history of hallucinations, both visual and auditory."

Hernandez, who was a teenage convenience store clerk at the time Etan went missing, now lives in Maple Shade, N.J. He was arrested Thursday after making a surprise confession in a case that has bedeviled investigators for 33 years. Hernandez told police he lured Etan into the basement of a convenience store with a promise of a soda, choked him to death, then stuffed his body in a bag and left it with trash on the street a block away.

The legal proceeding lasted only about four minutes. Expressionless, wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, Hernandez didn't speak or enter a plea.

A judge ordered Hernandez held without bail and authorized a psychological examination to see if he is fit to stand trial.

The prosecutor who appeared in court, Assistant District Attorney Armand Durastanti, said it was 33 years ago Friday that 6-year-old Etan Patz left his home on Prince Street to catch his school bus. "He has not been seen or heard from since. It's been 33 years, and justice has not been done in this case," Durastanti, said.

Etan disappeared on May 25, 1979, on his two-block walk to his bus stop in Manhattan. It was the first time his parents had let him walk the route by himself.

Next to the bus stop was a convenience store, where Hernandez, then 18, worked as a clerk. Police interviewed him this week, acting on a tip.

Etan's remains were never found, even after a massive search and a media campaign that made parents afraid to let their children out of their sight and sparked a movement to publicize the cases of missing youngsters. Etan was one of the first missing children to be pictured on a milk carton.

Hernandez's confession put investigators in the unusual position of bringing the case to court before they had amassed any physical evidence or had time to fully corroborate his story or investigate his psychiatric condition.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said investigators were retracing garbage truck routes from the late 1970s and deciding whether to search landfills for the boy's remains, a daunting prospect.

Crime scene investigators also arrived Friday morning at the building in Manhattan's SoHo section that once held the bodega where Hernandez worked. Authorities were considering excavating the basement for evidence.

They also were looking into whether Hernandez has a history of mental illness or pedophilia.

Browne said letting Hernandez remain free until the investigation is complete was not an option: "There was no way we could release the man who had just confessed to killing Etan Patz."

Legal experts said that even though police have a confession in hand, they are likely to work hard to make certain Hernandez isn't delusional or simply making up the story.

"There's always a concern whether or not someone is falsely confessing," said former prosecutor Paul DerOhannesian.

As Fishbein arrived at the courthouse, he asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives there, including his wife and daughter.

"It's a tough day. The family is very upset. Please give them some space," Fishbein said.

Etan's father, Stanley Patz, avoided journalists gathered outside the family's Manhattan apartment, the same one the family was living in when his son vanished.

Former SoHo resident Roberto Monticello, a filmmaker who was a teenager when Patz disappeared, said he remembers Hernandez as civil but reserved and "pent-up."

"You always got the sense that if you crossed him really bad, he would hurt you," Monticello said, although he added that he never saw him hit anyone.

Monticello said Hernandez was also one of the few teenagers in the neighborhood who didn't join in the all-out search for Etan, which consumed SoHo and the city for months. "He was always around, but he never helped. He never participated," Monticello said.

Hernandez, who moved to New Jersey shortly after Etan's disappearance, suffered a back injury that has kept him on disability for years, according to police.

The Rev. George Bowen Jr., pastor at Hernandez's church in Moorestown, N.J., said he attended services regularly.

"I would judge him to be shy and maybe timid. He never got involved in anything," Bowen said.

He said Hernandez's wife, Rosemary, and daughter, Becky, a college student, went to see him Thursday morning after he was taken into police custody.

"They were just crying their eyes out," Bowen said. "They were broken up. They were wrecked. It was horrible. They didn't know what they were going to do."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Hernandez gave a detailed confession that led police to believe they had the right man. He also said Hernandez told a relative and others as far back as 1981 that he had "done something bad" and killed a child in New York.

China: Xi Jinping's new generation, Li Datong

The imminent transition of power in Beijing will see a new ruling group arrive in power. But?does its background and formation prepare it for the scale of China's political and economic challenge, asks Li Datong.

2012 is something of an election year worldwide. As many as twenty-five presidents will have been elected by the time it ends, including heads of state of some of the world's most important countries: the United States, Russia, France...and the People's Republic of China. What is different about China, however, is that the election here is (as usual) held not by popular vote but confined to a core group at the centre of power. The identity of the new leader depends not on the people's support but to a considerable extent on the balance of forces inside the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

If the identity of many of presidents is unknown until the people have delivered their verdict, in China the choice of the next head of state (and general secretary of the party) is known in advance. Unless there is a major, unforeseeable reversal, a key party congress towards the end of 2012 will select Xi Jinping as the designated successor of Hu Jintao. There is a difference, though, with past experiences of transition, when the new leader emerged from an elderly group of senior cadres (Deng Xiaoping is the classic example).

This time, according to reliable sources, the "constituency" that sanctioned Xi's appointment was composed of hundreds of senior party officials. True, the process by which he got to be nominated at all is less clear - a kind of black-box operation; but the very fact that his preferment will have ultimately required an election (albeit a limited one) to give him legitimacy suggests that the basis of the transfer of power in China has begun to respond to changing times.

But if the Xi Jinping era is about to begin, it also means the Hu Jintao era is coming to an end. How to evaluate the past decade, and what signals does it offer for the next period?

A new cadre

In my view, these ten years have been a period of lack of progress and the absence of political reform, which has meant that a backlog of various social problems (such as growing official corruption) has accumulated. The resulting tensions in society carry an enormous cost, including financial (with huge spending on domestic security, approaching the level of military expenditure). The overriding concern of this generation of leaders with ensuring "stability" has made them afraid of undertaking real action.

Why is that? The reason is that Hu Jintao and his colleagues in the heart of Chinese state power - the politburo's standing committee - share almost the same background. They moved through the education system in an entirely closed environment which prioritised obedience, imparted selective information, valued technical subjects over the humanities and social sciences, and depleted the ability to think independently.

Most importantly, they were products of a political movement, in some cases children of "pariah" families persecuted during the cultural revolution, whose background taught them to be loyal and conformist. This mental structure was reinforced by their predominant training as "technicians" or "engineers". These are not visionary or even ambitious individuals, but people who have achieved their status by a kind of miracle and whose sole purpose is to keep hold of it. Their subconscious attitude is conveyed by Hu Jintao's answer to a Japanese child who asked him why he wanted to be president: "Because the Chinese people picked me".

What are the chances that Xi Jinping's generation will be different? In some ways the signs should be positive. The rising Chinese communist leaders also grew up in an atmosphere dominated by politics, but most of their adulthood has coincided with the reform and opening up era launched by Deng Xiaoping at the end of the 1970s. They have had access to a far greater range of domestic and international information, enjoyed an affluent life, engaged in the pursuit of wealth and power, had the chance to travel to western countries and make contacts with people from them, and in some cases receive training in subjects such as economics and law. Again most importantly, they are active in politics rather then being mere products of politics.

These children of the 1980s acquired early an awareness of the dark and ruthless arts of politics as conducted in communist China, as well as of the new opportunities becoming available in business. Three in particular of the successor generation focused their commitment on politics: Xi Jinping, Liu Yuan (son of?former president?Liu Shaoqi) and Bo Xilai (son of another veteran, Bo Yibo). Almost at the same time, these three chose the same road after graduating from university by moving to the provinces and establishing a local power-base.

Two decades later, they entered the CCP's core leadership team, with Xi Jinping identified early as the likeliest candidate to be the next general secretary - and Bo Xilai as the most remarkable figure in China's political arena. Now, however, the discrediting of Bo Xilai after the extraordinary events in his Chongqing fiefdom has halted his rise - leaving the political field more open and less assured than it had seemed.

The approach of veterans' children to the summit of Chinese power should be favourable to political reform, if only because hardline political opponents will find it harder to attack their credentials. A comparison here, even though not necessarily a welcome one, is the way that Chiang Kai-shek's son launched Taiwan's political democratisation. The next leadership might in this respect have more imaginative as well as political space than its predecessor.

A bold design

In 2011, the intellectual Zhang Musheng - author of an influential study?of rural development in the pre-reform era?-?published a book that advocated the implementation of a "new democracy" in China. This was needed, he said, to address the legacy of domestic problems that had built up over the three decades of reform. The support of workers and peasants can only be assured by giving them education, healthcare, social welfare, minimum housing security, industrial training; and a shift from the current model of polluting and resource-intensive production to greater worker and farner participation in the process of economic change.

Zhang's reform design is bold, involving mutualisation of state-owned assets and widespread share-ownership by citizens, in part to solve the problem of the welfare needs of people on low incomes. He also recommends that the CCP allows open factions, independent trade unions and farmers' associations, and freedom of the press. ?Only the Chinese Communist Party can save China; only new democracy can save the Chinese Communist Party?, he writes.

The book provoked a debate among Chinese intellectuals that lasted six months. Zhang Musheng (whose mentor was Chen Yizi, adviser to prime minister Zhao Ziyang before the latter?fell following the Tiananmen incident in 1989) continued to insist that a new collective leadership in China cannot allow the current situation to continue, and that people's desire for change is an indisputable reality. Without political change, an authoritarian regime that seeks to postpone reform will risk the fate of the Soviet Union and its satellites (or, closer to home, the Qing dynasty that ended in 1911). Will China's next generation understand the extent of the crisis, and the tide of history that awaits it?
