Congressional Baseball Game Ends In Republican Slaughter

WASHINGTON -- The political scorecard stood tied -- a Supreme Court victory for the Democrats, an attorney general contempt charge for the Republicans. It was time to decide Thursday's victor -- on the baseball field.

For the 51st year, members of Congress took to the diamond for the annual congressional baseball game. As usual, it was Republicans vs. Democrats. Away from the steps of the Supreme Court and the halls of Congress, under the Nationals Park lights, the Democrats slaughtered the Republicans, 18 to 5, in seven innings.

"We started off the morning great, we won that one," said the Democrats' pitcher, Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, referring to the Supreme Court's health care ruling. "But then you have to give them a little bit of a win on the Holder contempt-charade-circus this afternoon."

The GOP-led, late-afternoon vote holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress forced both teams to forego pre-game practice. Team managers said the game showed something good about an institution most Americans now hold in disdain.

"This is about baseball and apple pie and what's right about America," said Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the Republican manager. He said he and the Democrats' manager, Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Doyle, were "tighter than ticks" on baseball and charity.

"It's probably the only thing we agree on today -- playing baseball for charity," Doyle said. Later, in the Democrats' dugout, Doyle joked, "If anyone did get hurt today, they would all have insurance."

The teams played for nearly three hours in Washington's sweltering heat, showing diligent fielding, grim turns at bat and almost none of the vitriolic jabs they wield at their day jobs in the Capital. The Democrats brought 17 representatives, including Rep. Linda Sanchez of California. The Republican roster included 36 representatives and a senator, Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Democrats took control in the top of the second inning, scoring 11 runs. Rep. Mark Critz (D-Pa.), pinch-running for Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.), scored first, quickly followed by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ben Chandler (D-Ky.). With the bases loaded, a hit by Richmond drove in runs by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) and pinch-runner Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).

Polis banged out the game's only home run in the fifth inning, capitalizing on poor GOP fieldwork.

All the Republicans' runs were scored pinch-runners: Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (Tenn.), Rep. Robert Dold (Ill.), Rep. Erik Paulsen (Minn.), Rep. Bill Shuster (Pa.), and Rep. Sam Graves (Mo.).

Even in crushing defeat, Republicans found solace. They hit far better than last year. Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) credited the improvement to practice with a staffer who used to play for the Tampa Bay Rays.

"We saw the speed we're going to see tonight, which we didn't have last year," Womack said.

But by the bottom of the fifth, Republicans were down 13 runs -- and they needed a rallying cry.

"Take all that anger over the Supreme Court out," a reporter overheard in the GOP dugout.

Democrats failed to score in the final two innings.

Richmond was MVP of the Democrats' lineup, pitching the entire game and blasting several hits to the outfield. A former varsity pitcher at Morehouse College, the 37-year-old congressman was throwing 80 mph fastballs and said he felt less pressure this year than last.

Fans wasted little time using the day's events to frame their taunts. Democratic staffers shouted "Justice Roberts" and "We got health care" while Republicans were at bat.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took seats in the stands. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined the Democrats in celebrating after the game.

Presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) threw out the first pitch to his son, the senator. Before the game, Ron Paul was inducted into the game's Hall of Fame for a home run he hit out of the park in 1979 (when the game was played on the Four Mile Run field in Alexandria, Va.).

Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.), said the game was a sweet ending to a rough and tumble day in politics.

"It's sort of nice to rub it in a little bit," Baca said. But "once we get back there tomorrow, its back in the trenches."

With a rough landing, Chinese astronauts return safely to Earth (+video)

Following a successful manned docking with a prototype space station, China's historic two-week orbital mission ended with a bumpy landing and three grinning astronauts.

By SPACE.com Staff / June 29, 2012

Chinese astronaut Jing Haipeng, commander of the Shenzhou 9 mission, salutes after exiting the space capsule following the spacecraft's touchdown in Inner Mongolia.

Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth Thursday (June 28) after 13 days in space on a historic mission that made their country only the third nation ever to successfully dock a manned spacecraft to another in orbit.

Chip Reid reports.

China's Shenzhou 9 space capsule landed at about 10 p.m. EDT?(10 a.m. Friday, June 29 Beijing time) in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. To prepare for their journey home, the space crew ? which included China's first female astronaut Liu Yang ? separated the Shenzhou 9 capsule its target, the Tiangong 1 prototype space module, on Wednesday (June 27).

Their landing was broadcast live on China's state-run CCTV television network, showing the capsule streaking through the atmosphere like a meteor, deploying its main parachute, then making the final landing and rolling over on its side in a rough touchdown.

"We fulfilled the first manned manual docking," mission commander Jing Haipeng told CCTV reporters after exiting the Shenzhou 9 capsule. His comments in Chinese were translated into English by CCTV. "For the country and people all across the country, thank you for your concerns." ?[Photos of China's Shenzhou 9 Mission]

Jing and crewmates Liu Yang and Liu Wang appeared to be in good health after their space mission. The trio wore broad smiles and waved to cameras after leaving their spacecraft, but did sit in reclined chairs to help ease their adaptation back to Earth's gravity after nearly two weeks in weightlessness.

Shortly after the landing, China's Premier Wen Jiabao proclaimed the Shenzhou 9 mission a complete success.

"This manned docking mission of Tiangong 1 and Shenzhou 9 marks a large milestone, a major breakthrough for China to master the space docking technology," Wen said while reading a statement. "And also, it marks a decisive step forward on China's second step on its space strategy."

China's big space leap

China's Shenzhou 9 mission, which included successful displays of manual and automatic dockings, represented an important leap forward for China's space program. In addition to being China's longest space mission to date, it also tested technology vital for the country's goal of building space station in orbit by the year 2020.

"Chinese astronauts have their own home in space now," Jing told China's President Hu Jintao on Tuesday (June 26) during a special call according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. "We are proud of our country!" ?

And while the orbital linkups are important technological achievements for China, the mission also carried a wider social impact because it included the country's first female astronaut: the 33-year-old Liu Yang.

"It was like a home in Tiangong, and I feel very happy and proud of my country," Liu Yang told reporters after landing.

Jing, the commander, is China's first veteran astronaut to fly in space twice. The third crewmember, Liu Wang, served as the Shenzhou 9 docking pilot.

"It feels really good to feel the ground and to be back home," Liu Wang said.

Givenchy puts Virgin Mary images on menswear

PARIS (AP) ? Eclectic was the word to describe Day Three of Paris menswear week.

Friday's spring-summer collections had a little something for everyone: from the high-waisted gangster styles of film noir to fashions evoking Brazilian soccer and even the Catholic Church.

In one collection ? which its designer called the longest fashion show in history ? the boundaries were blurred between clothing and performance art.

"Here in Paris, the only thing that defines menswear is variety, difference. You cannot put it in one direction," French fashion federation president Didier Grumbach told The Associated Press.

Givenchy's enfant terrible designer, Riccardo Tisci, delivered the day's slickest show. In a provocative display, he delved into his Roman Catholic childhood in southern Italy to produce clothing loaded with Virgin Mary images.

Saturday's shows include Dior Homme and powerhouse Hermes.

___

GIVENCHY

It was an ecclesiastical tour de force in a religion-inspired collection. Incense wafted from the sidelines and organ music set the scene in a show that played with the layers of priestly garb.

Tisci shows always contain a shock factor. Here it came in the form of sleeveless tops and jackets printed with effigies of the Virgin Mary with a black bar over her eyes.

Jesus sandals ? de rigueur for all the models ? bore spiky chains.

"I'm going back to my roots," Tisci, an Italian Catholic, told The Associated Press. "It's about Communion, but a sex version of it."

Silhouettes were knee-length or at the hip. The longer looks in black, white and blood red descended like columns, with cassock undergarments hanging underneath. The shorter looks were best, such as a printed T-shirt paired with a jacket ? again featuring Virgin imagery ? that opened up like a Catholic triptych.

The sheer volume of clothes was unusual for a spring show, but Tisci rarely follows the rules.

"It's great to see so many clothes on the runway," former French Vogue Editor Carine Roitfeld said from the front row. "Each season he becomes stronger and stronger."

___

BAND OF OUTSIDERS

Was it a fashion show or performance art?

In their Paris debut, the fashion label Band of Outsiders is claiming to have pulled off the longest fashion show in history. The presentation ? which featured a male model living in a shop widow ? began Wednesday and wrapped up Friday evening, 60 hours later.

Live-streamed on the Internet for three days and four nights, it became somewhat of a phenomenon, receiving 25,000 unique hits, according to designer Scott Sternberg.

Sternberg decided that every 90 minutes, his model had to disappear briefly to change into a new outfit from the collection ? making the event more like an installation than a fashion show.

"I am a clothing designer, but the line between art and fashion is blurred," said Sternberg. "For what I do, a runway isn't valid."

___

JUUN J.

The exaggerated silhouette of the 1940s matinee idol was behind Juun J.'s bold and exhaustive menswear offering. The Korean designer, who impressed critics last season, took for inspiration the 1948 Japanese movie "Drunken Angel" by Akira Kurosawa.

"The (postwar) shapes are beautiful ... big shoulders, high waists," the designer said backstage.

If only Juun had kept it that simple.

The show started with the dark-pinstriped, broad-shouldered suits of film noir gangster movies. One beautiful black double breasted suit looked like a wrap-around kimono with its inflated and ruffled arms. East meets West was also nicely conveyed with tapered sultan pants.

But at times it felt like the designer was trying too hard. Silhouettes seemed to come in all shapes and sizes. And whatever he was trying to say was lost on one look, a white oversized coat with myriad flapping lapels and layers.

___

ATELIER GUSTAVOLINS

Brazilian designer Gustavo Lins used his menswear spring-summer 2013 show to kick off a collaboration with the Brazilian sportswear brand Penalty.

Sportswear and couture may seem like an unlikely mix, but in the current financial climate, independent designers have to think outside the box. With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil round the corner, this may prove a smart business move.

The low-budget show presented sporty-edged silhouettes with loose waists on models holding leather footballs. There were some interesting takes on trousers, such as gray cotton sultan pants, but overall the collection lacked cohesion.

Wine & Spirits: Liquid RAMMY Winners | Washington Life Magazine

D.C.?s annual culinary awards gala not only celebrates the best in food, but wine and beverages too. And lucky guests got to sample all the luscious libations.

The VirGINia is for Lovers Cocktail created by Gina Chersevani and team was just one of the cocktails to sample at the RAMMYs Sunday night. Photo credit Kelly Magyarics.

Mixologists from the five restaurants nominated for ?Best Beverage/Mixology Program? were on hand at beverage stations for guests to sample their nominated libations. Spanish small plates hotspot Estadio took home top honors for its beverage program headed by Adam Bernbach. (I have long been a huge fan of Bernbach?s creative drinks, from his housemade riffs on tonic, to the refreshing frozen Slushitos, and his innovative use of Sherry in cocktails.) His aromatic D?a de Descanso cocktail (the name means ?Day of Rest?) in Spanish, mixes the green and black tea botanicals in Beefeater 24 Gin with a housemade saffron and grapefruit syrup, lime and sparkling wine, garnished with lime and mint. Since this drink combined so many of my favorite cocktail ingredients, it was a can?t miss sip in my mind?mouth watering, balanced and multi-layered.?Accepting the RAMMY award, Bernbach cited the synergy of the team at Estadio as the key to the success of their beverage program, including chef Haidar Karoum, wine director Max Kuller and general manager (and fellow mixologist) Justin Guthrie. He shared a variation of the recipe with me:

D?a de Descanso / Haidar?s Day Off

Courtesy of Adam Bernbach, Bar Manager of Estadio and Proof

1 oz. Beefeater 24 gin

1/4 oz. lime juice

3/4 oz. saffron syrup (see Note)

Sparkling wine

Soda water

Orange twist, for garnish

Combine gin, lime and saffron syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, shake vigorously to chill, and double strain into a chilled Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. Top with equal parts sparkling wine and soda water, and garnish with an orange twist.

Note: For the Saffron syrup, boil 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, and add a few saffron threads. Steep to taste. Strain out solids and store syrup in the refrigerator.

Greg Engert created a light and refreshing beer-tail for the event. Photo credit Kelly Magyarics.

ChurchKey / Birch & Barley beer director Greg Engert created a fun hop-tail for the event. His Farmhouse Punch used Russian Standard vodka, lemon, grapefruit and peppercorn syrup, served in an absinthe-rinsed glass, topped with Belgian-style Pale Ale Rayon Vert, and garnished with fresh tarragon. The drink was crisp and light, with a touch of appealing bitterness and great aromatics from the fresh herb topper?it was my go-to sip at the end of the evening when everyone hit the dance floor.

Todd Thrasher of EatGoodFood Group ladled out punch bowl cocktail 42 and Cloudy. This 12 ingredient drink mixed Cruzan White Rum, honey vodka, passionfruit vodka, Sazerac rye, Brandy, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, sencha green tea, water, passion fruit juice, fresh lemon juice, Luxardo cherries, topped with Champagne. A laundry list of ingredients that take time to prep, for sure. But as with all punches, the already-tasty and complex creation only gained flavor as it was stirred and served all evening. Dan Searing of Room 11 also presented a punch. Conquistador?Punch was a blend of Sauva Hornitos Tequila, Gonzalez Byass Solera 1847 Oloroso Dulce, lime and clementine juices clementine zest syrup and fresh clementines, served over a large ice block. Summery and citrus-y, the drink also picked up attractive hints of cocoa and cinnamon from the sweet Sherry. Finally, mixologist Duane Sylvestre of Bourbon Steak created The Huntress. This drink used Red Stag Bourbon, a Jim Beam sweet cherry-flavored Bourbon, as well as cold black tea, housemade sarsaparilla syrup and lemon, served in an absinthe-rinsed glass and garnished with a lemon twist. RAMMY nominees for ?Best Wine Program? were Adour, Cork Wine Bar, Dino, Marcel?s and Plume. Neighborhood wine bar Cork, owned by Diane Gross and Khalid Pitts, took home the prize for its user friendly wine program. Gross seemed genuinely surprised by the win, and pointed out that a few short years ago, she and Pitts knew nothing of the restaurant business. Being recognized by her peers was a definitely honor, she said. The third beverage-related RAMMY was for the ?Hottest Restaurant Bar Scene.? Nominees were The Hamilton, Hill Country Barbecue Market, Mad Fox Brewing Company and Marvin, but?Fourteenth Street Corridor lounge Black Jack (located on the second floor above Pearl Dive Oyster Palace), took home the prize. The swanky lounge?s setting, which evokes turn-of-the-century circus with a touch of vaudeville, no doubt brings in guests; the masterful mixology of brothers Ari and Micah Wilder keeps them on their stools.

Guests at the reception prior to the award presentation were treated not only to the nominated cocktails, but to a selection of wines from Chile, and a Chilean Pisco cocktail

from Rachel Sergi of Jack Rose Dining Saloon?the potently pretty in pink cocktail uses dried rose petals, Campari and Burlesque Bitters. At the dinner reception following the awards, we could sample wines from Australia, Spain and Virginia (locally, Barboursville, Boxwood,??Tarara and Veritas were represented.) I was also digging the VirGINia is for Lovers cocktail created by Gina Chersevani, Stu Ellis and Michael Saccone, which had a healthy dose of locally distilled Catoctin Creek Watershed Gin along with rose water and creme de violette.

I am proud to have been covering D.C.?s beverage scene for about six years, for publications both national and regional. To watch it grow over this time period has been thrilling, and I continue to be impressed with the talent and drinks that are coming out of our fair city. Congratulations and cheers to all nominees and winners! I can?t wait to see what upcoming surprises you have in the shaker, on the wine rack and in the taps.

(AP Photo/Jim Mone)

(AP) ? Millions of smartphone users will soon begin receiving text messages about severe weather from a sophisticated government system that can send a blanket warning to mobile devices in the path of a dangerous storm.

The new Wireless Emergency Alerts system gives the National Weather Service a new way to warn Americans about menacing weather, even if they are nowhere near a television, radio or storm sirens.

Beginning Thursday, the system will notify people about approaching tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards and other threats. When a warning is issued for a specific county, a message of no more than 90 characters will cause late-model smartphones in that area to sound a special tone and vibrate.

Users do not have to sign up for the service or pay for the text message. And people who prefer not to get the warnings can opt out of the system.

"These alerts will make sure people are aware of any impending danger and provide them with the information needed so they can be safe until the threat is over," said Amy Storey, spokeswoman for CTIA-The Wireless Association, an industry trade group that helped set up the system.

The system does not yet work with all smartphones or in all areas. It is part of a broader alert network the Federal Emergency Management Agency launched in April that can also send public-safety warnings from the president and participating state and local governments. But the weather service estimates that more than 90 percent of the messages will be about storms.

The weather warnings will include tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis, flash floods, extreme winds, blizzards and ice and dust storms. Designers were concerned about overloading users with too much information, so they deliberately limited the messages to warnings, not watches, and excluded severe thunderstorm warnings, weather service spokeswoman Susan Buchanan said.

Wireless carriers serving almost 97 percent of U.S. subscribers have agreed to participate, including the biggest nationwide companies ? AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA. Each of the four offers at least some phones capable of receiving emergency alerts, with more on the way.

Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile say they offer the service nationwide. AT&T only offers it in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore., at the moment. Spokesman Michael Balmoris said the company will add additional markets over time but declined to say which ones or when.

Government officials don't have a good handle on exactly how many capable devices are already in use, but Damon Penn, assistant administrator for national continuity programs at FEMA, said the number is probably in the millions.

He said smartphone users should check with their carriers to find out whether service is available and if their device is able to use it. He said many people own phones equipped to get the new alerts but don't know it yet.

Sprint spokeswoman Crystal Davis said most Sprint smartphones now in use can receive the alerts thanks to recent automatic software upgrades. All new models will be equipped, as will all new tablet devices.

One unanswered question is when the legions of Apple iPhone users will be able to receive alerts. Buchanan said iPhones are supposed to join the system in the fall, but she didn't know if that means only new iPhones, or if software upgrades will make older models capable, too. Representatives of Apple Inc., which is highly secretive about its product upgrades, did not respond to several messages seeking details.

FEMA's system carries three kinds of alerts: presidential alerts, which might deal with national security information such as terrorist attacks; imminent-threat alerts, which include weather warnings as well as public-safety messages from local authorities; and Amber Alerts issued by law enforcement agencies for kidnapped children.

Phone users can opt out of the imminent threat and Amber Alerts, usually just by changing their settings, but they can't opt out of presidential alerts.

Twenty-eight state or local emergency management agencies in about a dozen states are authorized to send imminent-threat alerts. Eighty-three others are in the process of getting certified.

Agencies have different ideas for the system. Minnesota is considering using it for chemical spills or nuclear accidents. In southern Florida's Miami-Dade County, it might convey hurricane evacuation information.

Curt Sommerhoff, Miami-Dade's director of emergency management, said the alerts will permit authorities to distribute urgent information to people in danger "whether you're a resident, employee or visitor."

On the streets of downtown Minneapolis, a couple of smartphone users were open to receiving the unsolicited weather and other warnings.

"I spend enough time reading junk on my phone that's of no real benefit to me. I might as well read something useful," said Bob Burns, a Minnetonka attorney sitting at a sidewalk cafe as he worked on both an iPhone and an iPad. "It's putting technology to use for the public good."

Dan Smith, a photographer from Reston, Va., who was in Minneapolis for a convention, said he was worried that the messages could became intrusive.

"It's like email. It used to be you only got stuff you wanted. Now you get 20 junk messages for every good one," Smith said.

The system doesn't use the satellite-based global positioning system to determine a phone's location. Participating carriers just send an alert out from every cell tower in the affected county, and capable smartphones pick it up.

So if a user from Minneapolis travels to Kansas City, Mo., that person would get local warnings for Kansas City, not their home city. That feature sets the system apart from weather apps that deliver information based on users' ZIP code but don't automatically update their locations when users travel.

Greg Carbin, the warning coordination meteorologist at the national Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla, said in a typical year most smartphone users will probably receive relatively few weather alerts.

"Even in those areas of the country where there's a lot of severe weather, the frequency with which you would be alerted is pretty low," Carbin said.

Finding The Facts ? Cosmetic Surgery | Internet Contents

It is an unfortunate fact that in today?s society there is a demand for attractive features in the workplace, in social circles, and in most everyday events. It is a well known fact that the more attractive the individual, the more chances for success are opened to them. Whether it is a hot topic for aggressive debate or a simple accepted fact of life, more and more people are turning to the art of cosmetic plastic surgery to perfect their imperfections.

While most cosmetic surgery is considered an elective procedure and is not covered under medical insurance, more and more insurance companies are covering at least part if not all of the cost of cosmetic procedures for what qualifies as disfigurement. The insurance companies themselves have realized, given the statistics, that reasonably attractive people typically have higher paying jobs and a higher quality of life, which overall reduces the costs of medical issues such as depression and obesity related health concerns.

THE RIGHT PLASTIC SURGEON FOR YOU

Plastic surgery is a decision that requires not only a tremendous amount of consideration in regards to the personal body, but a huge decision when it comes to picking the right doctor. Deciding whether plastic surgery is the right personal decision can be daunting. Finding discomfort with a body part is normal, everyone has body image issues. If the image you have of yourself is grounded in accuracy and you weigh the risks carefully and decide that plastic surgery is right for you, it is now time to understand the steps of finding a good doctor.

The cosmetic plastic surgery industry has grown by over 50% in just the last five years. People are discovering the resources to change their outward appearance. It is important to remember that changing the outward appearance does not change the inner individual. Sometimes it?s just a new nose. Sometimes that new nose brings about an air of confidence that was previously lacking, and therein lies the emotional change that most are seeking.

There are many factors that go into finding the right cosmetic surgical practice. With cosmetic surgery centers becoming ever more popular, avoiding some basic pitfalls is becoming more difficult rather than easier. The doctor, their experience with the elected procedure, the risks associated with the procedure, and the expected recovery time and restrictions are some, but not all of the considerations one must face when determining if plastic surgery is right for them.

The right plastic surgeon makes all the difference. We have all seen the horror television shows of plastic surgery mistakes, and there?s not a single potential patient that doesn?t want to avoid that scenario. Choosing the right plastic surgeon is a process that requires research, time, patience, and often money.

Fortunately for those who have a want or a need for a plastic surgeon now have a resource to assist them in finding the right doctor for them. Beyond that, understanding cosmetic surgical procedures is equally as vital. Wouldn?t it be wonderful if you could research all your cosmetic surgery needs in one place?

LIFE PLASTIC SURGERY

At lifeplasticsurgery, a phenomenal resource website for understanding cosmetic procedures, physician practices, and general information regarding this life altering process. There are risks and benefits to all plastic surgery procedures. An informed consumer can typically make a better judgment concerning the risk benefit ratio.

Whether you are in search of a simple Rhinoplasty or a need for the correction of a disfigurement, not every plastic surgeon has the exact skills for every procedure. It may also be possible to find lower cost surgery for disfigurement, depending on the surgeon. In some cases it can be possible to find nearly no cost assistance for disfigurement plastic reconstructive surgery. Lifeplasticsugery is great place to start when deciding whether or not plastic and reconstructive surgery is right for you.

Aesthetic plastic surgery is a finite practice of skill, knowledge, and artistic quality. Most that have undergone cosmetic enhancement have been pleased with the physical results, but also with the impact it has had on their lives. As unfortunate as it may be, we live in a world where how you appear on the outside influences what people assume is on the inside.

Physical appearance plays a role in nearly every aspect of life. Beautiful people tend to land more attractive partners, have more friends, land higher paying jobs, and operate in the world with more self confidence. Whether this point is fair and right is irrelevant. We can not change the way the world views us, we can only decide how much impact it is going to have on our lives.

Those with physical deformities, whether birth defect related or accidental disfigurement, have an even harder time coping in a world where physical appearance affects so much in our daily lives. Unfair and often inaccurate determinations are made about a person?s intelligence when they are afflicted with a disability. Those who have experience the remarkable transformation of corrective plastic surgery have experienced a new world of options opened to them.

The articles included in Lifeplasticsurgery database are a breath of fresh air in their informative organization. Navigating the website is simple, and you can find information on various procedures such as nose jobs, tummy tucks, brow lifts and liposuction. There are also remarkably explicit and informative articles on most relevant subjects, including recovery. Recovering from cosmetic surgery is an area of expertise that quite often gets overlooked. In fact, so many cosmetic practices forget to periodically remind their patients that cosmetic surgery is in fact, surgery. It comes with the same risks as any procedure requiring anesthesia and requires a recovery period.

DON?T FORGET ?THE FACTS OF PLASTIC SURGERY?

Any surgical procedure that alters the body is going to involve some amount of pain. There are a surprising number of patients who never consider this factor. Any surgical procedure that alters the body is going to require specific recovery restrictions and time to heal. It is paramount that it is understood prior to electing to have any cosmetic surgical procedure done that the recovery process is well understood and the expectations of the surgeon are realistic.

The patient who has a realistic understanding of the procedure to be performed as well as a high level of knowledge about the anticipated results and recovery is more likely to have a quality experience when it comes to plastic surgery. The patient that takes it upon him or her self to obtain the necessary knowledge to educate themselves runs a much higher likelihood of being completely satisfied with the results. The patient who pulls a random doctor from the phone book and has not educated themselves about the risks and the realistic outcomes is likely to be more dissatisfied with the results. As well, they are more likely to be in complete shock with the high level of pain they experience waking up from anesthesia.

It is important to realize that most cosmetic surgery physicians have not been patients. These procedures appear to the physician, in most cases, routine. Regardless of whether you?re having teeth pulled, your eyebrows lifted, or an entire reconstructive package, when it is your body it is never routine. The questions provided and the scope of the articles written on Lifeplasticsurgery give the potential patient a wonderful springboard for narrowing down different prospective doctors.

The education process associated with Life plasticsurgery.com is illustrated in its rich topics, the news links, and the high quality physician and association links. The ease of the website?s use allows a potential patient to absorb quite a bit of information in a relatively short period of time. This allows the potential client to significantly improve their chances of finding the right plastic surgeon for them. And of course, a compatible plastic surgeon makes for a much more reasonable experience overall.

Lifeplasticsurgery is a valuable asset to the cosmetic reconstructive surgery industry. With open and honest reviews, facts and heartfelt relational opinions, it can assist the consumer in a vast array of life altering decisions. Plastic surgery can be an amazing, life altering experience that truly allows the patient to transform their life overnight. Lifeplasticsurgery is providing a platform to assist anyone wishing to embark on this journey a research field for high consumer knowledge.

The cosmetic surgery industry applauds web site sources such as lifeplasticsurgery. More knowledgeable patients make for easier communication between doctors and patients, as well as a better understanding of what the patient is requesting, based on their ability to articulate their knowledge and how it relates to their needs.

For anyone even just considering the possibility of altering their selves and their lives with the wonder of plastic surgery, Lifeplasticsurgery is an absolute on the list of resources recommended. The unbiased and informative articles, the ease of web site use, and its rock solid content are all consumer friendly top picks.

Ugly Buttons

The real history of the remote control, then, is one of competing impulses?to take control of your television and to never leave your couch, to hack and to lounge, to do something and nothing. The remote devices that followed the Lazy Bones were marketed not as a means of relaxation, but as a way to fight back against the network oligarchs and their commercial sponsors. By the mid-1950s, a backlash had formed against the excesses of advertising. (Vance Packard's dire warning in The Hidden Persuaders arrived in 1957.) Consumers wanted to protect themselves against brainwashing ad-men, and remote controls offered a means of self-defense. First came the independently-marketed TV Hush and Blab-Off?a volume knob and a mute switch respectively?that could be manipulated from your seat. (The latter was invented by matzo magnate Howard Manischewitz.) But Zenith, too, had a stake in the backlash: The company was pushing its own alternative to broadcast TV, an early version of pay-per-view called Phonevision. In 1955, it introduced the Flash-Matic?a wireless TV remote shaped like a laser gun, so viewers could zap commercials into silence.

An Ethical Question ? creating an ethical environment | WOMEN ...

Since the early 1980?s, there has been increasing concern and discussion regarding business values, ethics and morals. Good ethical behaviour and strong values are prime company assets and important components for long term business success.

While large businesses identify specific behaviours as inappropriate or detrimental to achieving organizational objectives, many small business do not consider or have the resources to address the issue. ??That is beginning to change as many small businesses are recognizing the positive relationship between demonstrating strong and specific ethical values, and productivity and profitability.

So how does a small business owner foster an ethical environment?

Because everyone has a different idea of ?right? and ?wrong? based on familial values and past experiences, it is important to include employee?s opinions and thoughts about?business values. Open discussions can take place at staff meetings, planning sessions or round tables. Once these values have been established, it is important to recognize and adhere to them, especially by the owner or manager. Reinforcing these values during employee training is also essential.

A business owner can also give considerable weight to ethical behavior in relation to other business?activities. Business ethics (and ethics in general) is a soft and subjective topic (unlike, say, accounting, where rules, regulations and practices are strictly set in place).? Therefore, priority should be given to ethical practices, especially when they are new, so employee attention,?acceptance and practice?can take place.

Consistency also aids in the development of business ethics. To be consistent, values, beliefs and actions should be rational and free of contradictions. To uncover contradictions, examine situations where values were tested. Were situations handled?similarly? Were there exceptions? If so, how was the exception justified? In other words, we must apply the same standards to one situation that we apply to another unless we can prove that the two situations differ.

Achieving the desired values require time, effort, consistency, and support from all staff members. By hiring the right employees and continually providing recognition based on adherence and acceptance, organizational values become internalized. The challenge lies in establishing clear values and balancing the importance of ethics while increasing the bottom line. How balanced these two goals are will determine the success and satisfaction?of the owner and the employees, as well as customers.

HBT: Red Sox have no direction

Make no mistake about it: this is a pretty nasty storm the Red Sox have had to weather.

The team has already had to use 41 players. The left fielder and the closer have missed the entire season so far. The All-Star center fielder has missed most of it. At one point, the team?s top five outfielders were all on the disabled list. Two members of the rotation are currently on the DL. The No. 4 starter and the expected eighth-inning guy both blew up. The All-Star second baseman was dealt a nasty thumb injury that limited his production. The All-Star first baseman has failed to produce.

That the Red Sox are 38-34 anyway is actually quite impressive and a testament to all of the talent on hand.

Still, if any word sums up the Boston franchise these last two years, it?s directionless. It?s constantly running through new plans, often abandoning old ones at the drop of a hat.

That?s how a team ends up paying someone to take its former All-Star third baseman and getting only a couple of question marks in return.

The Red Sox probably had no choice. Will Middlebrooks obviously needs to play regularly, which left Kevin Youkilis without a role. The offers weren?t exactly poring in, that?s for sure. Zach Stewart and Brent Lillibridge probably was the best they could do.

Still, the point is that the Red Sox left themselves with no choice yet again. It?s a recurring theme. They let the luxury tax rule their offseason, and in their attempts to save money, gave away Marco Scutaro and parted with Josh Reddick and Jed Lowrie in order to rebuild their pen.

When they let Theo Epstein go to Chicago, they did so without working out compensation beforehand. In the end, all they ended up with was a soon-to-be injured reliever in Chris Carpenter.

The Red Sox probably aren?t through backing themselves into corners. They?ll have to figure out an outfield once Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury return. The pitching staff, too, could get overcrowded in a hurry if Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz return in early July and Daniel Bard gets things turned around in Triple-A. If they fail to reach the postseason, they?ll face questions about whether they should blow up the whole team this winter or carry on with the talented but overly expensive group of stars around now.

In the meantime, they?ll just have to hope Middlebrooks keeps producing despite his troubling strikeout-to-walk ratio. They won?t get any immediate help from Stewart, who will be a part of the rotation at Triple-A Pawtucket. Lillibridge, who was hitting just .175 this season, will serve as a fifth outfielder and occasional backup for Middlebrooks.

And they?ll carry on without Youkilis. He surely wasn?t going to be happy in a backup role, and given his history, he shouldn?t have been. Youkilis is definitely past his peak, but from 2008-10, he had a three-year run as one of the AL?s top three hitters. Even last year, he was still well above average at .258/.373/.459. Odds are that he?ll be a quality regular for the White Sox, and my guess is that he?ll outhit Middlebrooks over the rest of the year, though he?ll probably be good for at least one significant injury along the way. Even so, the Red Sox will end up missing him when all is said and done.

(AP) ? Facebook's No. 2 executive, Sheryl Sandberg, has become the first woman on the social-networking company's board of directors.

Sandberg was lured from Google in 2008 to become Facebook's chief operating officer. Besides being the first woman, she is the first Facebook executive other than founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the board.

There had been calls for the company to add women to its board ahead of its initial public offering of stock in mid-May.

In announcing the move Monday, Facebook Inc. didn't say whether it came in response to calls to add women. But as the No. 2 to Zuckerberg, she was a logical choice.

"Sheryl has been my partner in running Facebook and has been central to our growth and success over the years," Zuckerberg said in a statement. "Her understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit for our board."

Sandberg has been largely responsible for building Facebook's advertising business. She also often serves as Facebook's public face, appearing at conferences and important meetings, while Zuckerberg often prefers to stay in the background and focus on Facebook's products.

Sandberg's appointment is somewhat symbolic. She is already a highly influential executive at Facebook, which is unlikely to change with her board appointment. That said, Zuckerberg still controls Facebook and its board due to his holding more than half of its voting stock.

Sandberg, 42, joins Zuckerberg, Netflix chief Reed Hastings and entrepreneurs Marc Andreessen, James Breyer and Peter Thiel. Also on the board are Donald Graham, CEO of The Washington Post Co., and Erskine Bowles, president emeritus of the University of North Carolina system.

Sandberg also serves on the boards of The Walt Disney Co. and of groups such as Women for Women International. She won't receive any additional financial compensation for the board role.

UltraViolet, a women's rights group that has been asking Facebook to add women to its board, said its campaign "should have never been necessary."

"We hope this is a first step for Facebook and in the coming months more women will be added to their board," UltraViolet co-founder Nita Chaudhary said in a statement. "In addition, we hope that other companies with all-male boards, particularly those in the tech sector, will follow Facebook's lead."

Most large corporations have at least one female board member, but that's where it ends for many of them. According to a report on corporate board gender diversity from corporate advisory firm Glass Lewis, 91 percent of companies in the S&P 500 had at least one female board member in 2011.

Catalyst, a nonprofit group that advocates for women in business, says in a report that only 16.1 percent of board seats at Fortune 500 companies were held by women last year.

Companies in the energy and technology sectors had the lowest levels of female board representation, the Glass Lewis report found.

Should We Count Non-Employer Businesses? - Small Business ...

An increasing share of American businesses have no employees. ?That trend makes it difficult to understand what?s been happening to American entrepreneurship over the past 20 years. Because non-employer businesses are so numerous and so different from employer businesses, the sliding share of businesses with employees makes it difficult to compare apples-to-apples over time in the small business sector.

question mark

The most recent data provided by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration shows that, in 2010, 21.7 million U.S. businesses were without employees, while only 5.6 million had them. At 79 percent of all American companies, the characteristics of non-employers swamp the overall data.

But non-employers account for very little of the economic impact of small businesses. Non-employer businesses are virtually a rounding error in the measurement of business sales. The most recent Census Bureau data show that non-employer firms accounted for only 4 percent of business receipts in 2009. The average non-employer business generated less than $40,000 in annual sales in that year.

Similarly, data released by the Office of Advocacy of the Small Business Administration show that non-employers accounted for only 7 percent of capital expenditures by U.S. businesses in 2009, the most recent year reported. And, of course, non-employer businesses accounted for none of the country?s employment. ?The economic impact of non-employer businesses is so slight that the Census Bureau refrains from measuring employer and non-employer businesses together.

Here?s an example of why: In 2009, the average capital expenditure of businesses with employees was $177,000, while that for non-employers was only $3,500.

Combining the two businesses often leads to estimates that hide what?s going on in the economy. For instance, the number of people working for the average U.S. business declined from 4.8 in 1992 to 4.3 in 2009, suggesting that the size of American companies is shrinking.

However, that trend is actually an anomaly of the increasing share of non-employers, which increased from 73.4 percent of U.S. companies in 1992 to 79.5 percent in 2010. Employer businesses have actually grown since the early 1990s, with average size of an employer business increasing from 18.2 to 19.9 between 1992 and 2009.

Similarly, average capital expenditures of U.S. businesses declined a slight 4.9 percent in real terms between 1997 and 2009. The decline in average capital expenditures was a much scarier-looking 28.4 percent in inflation-adjusted terms over that period when all companies are measured. That?s because most of the decline in capital spending comes from the rising in the share of non-employer businesses.

Patterns like these suggest that we need to understand why fewer and fewer American entrepreneurs are starting businesses with employees. Without knowing the answer to that question, just interpreting the data on small business will be difficult.

Sandusky Juror Speaks Out: Ex-Coach?s Reaction During Verdict Was ?Confirmation? Jury Made Right Call

Sandusky booking

A juror said Jerry Sandusky showed no emotion as the guilty verdict was read, confirming for him and his fellow jurors that they had made the right call in convicting the former Penn State assistant football coach on 45 out of 48 counts of child sexual abuse.

?That was just confirmation,? Harper told NBC?s ?Today? on Saturday. ?I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face, no real emotion. Just kind of accepting, you know, because, it was true.?

Harper said the jury worked through the charges systematically, combing over any inconsistencies in witness testimony and reconciling them. Ultimately, Harper said, there was a corroborating story among all of the victims and jurors ?were on the same page.?

Harper said he and his fellow jurors did not learn that Sandusky?s adopted son had come forward accusing his father of abusing him as well until after they made their decision.

?We heard about it the same time, we had suspected that but we had no evidence of it,? Harper said. ?It just solidified our decision.?
