MobiHealthNews notes that some of these apps have become highly ranked in the App Store. The interesting trend here is that there are multiple allergy management apps produced by pharmaceutical companies, which while providing useful information, can also serve as marketing vehicles for specific drugs. Given that iOS devices in general, and the iPad in particular, deliver a better marketing punch than other types of ads, that could impact how allergy sufferers evaluate treatment options.

The second trend is apps by established health care providers like individual doctor or provider practices, medical groups, hospitals, and insurance carriers. Many healthcare professionals and facilities are embracing consumer-oriented apps as ways to distribute provider information and general health references. PUNTERS could be forgiven for having to check their programs at the start of The Smashing Pumpkins' Splendour-closing set last night.

But the festival weary crowd, on their last legs after three days of music revelry, was quickly rewarded with classic songs Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Today in quick succession.

Front man Billy Corgan acknowledged the thousands who stuck it out to see the alternative rockers.

"Thank you so much for sticking around," he said.

"How you doing? Don't (expletive) lie to me, you're tired."

The set also included 1979, Tonight, Tonight, the title track from the band's new album Oceania and a cover of David Bowie's Space Oddity for the encore.

Earlier, The Kooks' only Australian show of the year was briefly stopped about 20 minutes in when a punter scaled one of the poles of the Supertop.

Metric also had a slight stoppage of their set when power was cut to the big screens flanking the stage.

Missy Higgins' hour-long set was one big sing along with dedicated fans filling up the GW McLennan tent.

Higgins played four songs from her long-awaited release The Ol' Razzle Dazzle and described the album as a "love letter to music".

"I wrote a lot of songs to deal with my very tumultuous relationship with music," she said.

Celebrities spotted over the three-day festival included comedian Chris Lilley, footballer Greg Bird and radio personality?Ryan "Fitzy"?Fitzgerald.

Health care organizations and charities have traditionally focused on relatively inexpensive strategies for combating infectious diseases, said Ching-Hon Pui, M.D., director of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Division at St. Jude and American Cancer Society F.M. "And their survival rates are very inferior to rates in countries with advanced health care systems. However, the World Health Organization and many international charities don?t even list chronic diseases, including cancer, as health priorities on their agendas."

The increasing pediatric cancer death rate in countries with limited resources is especially tragic because strategies exist that could be used to ensure wider access to effective cancer treatment, according to Raul C. Ribeiro, M.D., director of the St. Jude International Outreach Program and another co-author of the editorial. The authors note that one of the most effective strategies is a cooperative process between institutions, called twinning, which is already in place in Central and South America, Africa and Southeast Asia, thanks to the efforts of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, several institutions in Europe and St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital in the United States. St. Jude has already assisted several developing countries in significantly improving the cure rates of leukemia?the most common childhood cancer?as well as Burkitt lymphoma, Wilms tumor, Hodgkin disease and other curable malignancies.

"We?ve found that recruiting local oncologists to serve as program directors gives the best results," Ribeiro said. "The recruited oncologists serve as program directors, advocates of pediatric oncology units and coordinators of training for essential cancer care providers."

The authors argue that even the low level of development that exists in some parts of the world is not an insurmountable obstacle to establishing a productive twinning relationship. A program that concentrates on education, training and the treatment of the most responsive cancers could be effective. For example, in parts of Africa it might be possible to successfully treat children who have Burkitt?s lymphoma using a single drug, cyclophosphamide. Such twinning projects can be supported initially by the partner in the more affluent country, the authors say. Local charitable groups can raise funds to support an oncology program.

Another benefit of twinning would be broadening the scope of cancer research to include cases in developing countries. This would facilitate studies of the roles that genetic background, environment and lifestyle play in susceptibility to cancer and pathogenesis of particular cancers. Such studies would be easier to conduct if pediatric cancer units are created in resource-poor nations and if their development promotes international cell and tissue banks and the ability to collect long-term treatment follow-up data.

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) ? Illinois Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., whose whereabouts haven't been disclosed since he quietly took a medical leave from Congress several weeks ago, is being treated for depression at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, according to a statement released by the hospital.

Jackson is undergoing an extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and for gastrointestinal issues, the hospital said, providing the first details about his medical condition. But the statement released late Friday didn't disclose where the longtime Chicago congressman, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had previously been staying.

"Further information will be released as Congressman Jackson's evaluation proceeds," the statement said, adding that he and his family were "grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have been received throughout his care."

Phone messages left by The Associated Press for his spokesman weren't returned Friday. In 2004, Jackson underwent a procedure to help him lose weight that involves removing part of the stomach and rearranging the intestine.

The Democrat went on leave June 10, though his office didn't disclose it until weeks later and has been mum on details ever since. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. But his staff later said Jackson's condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment. They also said Jackson has been grappling with emotional issues.

Under mounting pressure from his colleagues and constituents, his office released a statement last month from his unnamed doctor saying Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."

The timing of his medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption.

Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Jackson faces a Republican and independent candidate in November, though he's widely expected to win re-election. He first won office in a 1995 special election and has easily won each race since. His district includes parts of Chicago and some suburbs.

Mild Tebowmania as Jets open camp

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) ? Fans chanting his name and carrying banners proclaiming his greatness ? or otherwise ? will have to wait a couple of days. As the New York Jets reported to training camp Thursday, Tim Tebow simply was another player.

Well, almost. Tebow had to chuckle when asked about the legions of media that follow his every move, even on a rainy afternoon when nothing more is required of him or his teammates than showing up.

With perhaps 50 reporters, cameramen and broadcasters on hand at SUNY Cortland, it didn't look much different than one of Tebow's postgame gatherings in Denver last season. Surely, the focus is not the same: Tebow now is a backup to Mark Sanchez, as everyone from the head coach to the offensive coordinator to Sanchez himself made clear for the, oh, millionth time.

Still, it was Tebow who drew the most attention, including a comical episode in which the TV folks had to scramble for position when Tebow lined up elsewhere from where they anticipated.

"I really try not to let this affect my life," a laughing Tebow said about the media crush that is likely to continue through the rest of the summer. "I try to live my life and not worry about what I can't control."

Tebow then glanced all around him and smiled.

"This is like the first day of college."

Ah, but this central New York university hasn't seen anything like what could develop over the next few weeks, beginning Saturday when the Jets hold their first public practice. Every move by both quarterbacks will be scrutinized not only by local and national journalists ? one Jets employee asked Thursday when TSPN (all Tebow all the time) goes on the air ? but by the folks who buy tickets. Fans are certain to take up Tebow's cause, or Sanchez's.

Tebow says he can ignore all that and concentrate on "getting better every day."

"Playing football doesn't get old," the third-year quarterback who saved Denver's 2011 season said.

How much football he will play is the big question. It figures that during the preseason, when starting QBs don't get on the field for much game action, Tebow will be the Jets' main man.

But in practices, and certainly when the regular season kicks off against Buffalo on Sept. 9, the Jets expect him to be part-time Tebow behind three-year starter Sanchez.

"We clearly have a starting quarterback and that's Mark," coach Rex Ryan reiterated. "I know the history of the league and the saying, 'When you have two quarterbacks, you don't have any.' Tell that to the San Francisco 49ers with Montana and Young.

"This is a different situation, with a clear-cut starting QB."

Clear cut to some, including those in power with the Jets ? for now. Not so clear to the impassioned fans of the ultra-popular Tebow.

Not that Tebow doesn't have a role in the offense being installed by former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano. At Miami, Sparano revitalized the wildcat, and he believes Tebow fits the QB role in that formation perfectly.

Plus, the Jets are toying with using Tebow as the protector on punts because of his size and athletic skills.

"I have a very good idea how I want to use him, and the way I want to go about it in the next several weeks," Sparano said. "We'll throw the offensive book at him and see what sitcks. Things that look good we'll continue. Things that don't look good we'll throw out."

What no one wants ? not even Sanchez ? is to have Tebow cede the starting quarterback job without a fight. Ryan can't imagine that happening.

"You never want a player who doesn't want to be the guy," Ryan said when asked if he is eager for Tebow to push Sanchez for the No. 1 spot. "Competition is great for everybody.

"Tim is going to play here, there's no question about it."

Actually, Rex, there are plenty of questions about it, and the Jets will be answering them throughout a preseason that already borders on the absurd. Queries such as:

?How much will Tebow play?

?At what junctures?

?At what positions?

?In the regular offense, or only in the wildcat?

For his part, a bulked-up Sanchez wisely is concentrating on his responsibilities. He gained 12 pounds of muscle mass and now goes at 230 pounds. He is eager to be the team leader. He was one of the first players to enter the dormitories on Thursday, and the second behind defensive tackle Sione Pouha to speak with the press.

Of course, even as Sanchez spoke, several media types with microphones in their hands or video cameras on their shoulders were peering around to see if Tebow was about to make an appearance.

Seems like that's how it's going to be for most everyone when the Jets take the field.

U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif., and his youngest daughter, Briana Bilbray, share more in common than family ties and a love of the outdoors. They both have been diagnosed with skin cancer and are speaking out about it in an effort to encourage others to prevent and detect skin cancer early.

?Being tan was a big part of my life,? said Briana, 25, in the video. ?Being in San Diego, it was the look.?

Briana?s family encouraged her to bring a mole on her shin to her doctor?s attention, which Briana postponed. She was later diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, in spring 2011 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. She has since relapsed twice, the most recent of which brought about a need for radiation treatments, which she underwent in April 2012.

?Until something?s done and they find a treatment that can stop this disease, I am going to be going through this probably the rest of my life,? said Briana. ?The pain that I am putting my family through because of my negligence is the worst feeling in the world and all I had to do was wear sunscreen.?

Just two weeks after Briana?s diagnosis in 2011, her father was diagnosed with another form of skin cancer ? squamous cell carcinoma ? which occurred as a white patch on his lip. Rep. Bilbray had surgery to remove the cancer and an additional surgery to reconstruct the lip.

?It?s absolutely essential that everyone understand it?s our job to detect skin cancer,? said Rep. Bilbray. ?Whenever in doubt, go talk to a board-certified dermatologist. Find out about it.?

?Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer, so it?s vitally important that people wear sunscreen, cover up and seek shade,? said board-certified dermatologist Daniel M. Starbucks profit rises, but misses expectations

NEW YORK (AP) ? Starbucks Corp. says its net income rose 19 percent in its fiscal third quarter, but the results fell short of Wall Street expectations and shares slumped 9 percent.

The Seattle-based coffee giant said global revenue at cafes open at least a year rose 6 percent, driven by growth in China and Asia, while the region encompassing Europe, the Middle East and Africa was flat. The figure rose 7 percent in the Americas.

For the three months ended July 1, the company said it earned $333.1 million, or 43 cents per share. That's compared with $279.1 million, or 36 cents per share, a year ago.

Total revenue rose 13 percent to $3.3 billion.

Analysts on average expected a profit of 45 cents per share on revenue of $3.34 billion.

Some ports are exciting, like when Metal Gear Solid 2 made its way to the original Xbox. Some ports are less exciting, like Myst appearing on every interactive device on the face of the Earth. These are the games that we have seen re-appear more often than any other game. Some are old, like the original Prince of Persia, and some are young, already making their way to as many platforms as possible like Angry Birds. Here they are ranked in order of appearances.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Appeared on Nintendo 64, PC, Dreamcast, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Color, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, iOS, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS for a total of 9 ports.

I?m not sure why Ubisoft holds this admittedly decent 3D platformer with such high regard. It was great when it came out, but every time it is re-released, it just seems to be a reminder that the game is aging very quickly. If you want to see for yourself how the game plays, just pick it up for pretty much everything you have. I think there is a refrigerator version coming soon.

Final Fantasy I

Final Fantasy I made its first appearance on the NES in 1990, and it stayed quiet for a long time. Square (pre-Enix) was too busy making legitimate sequels to the franchise before they thought in 2002, ?hey let?s just redo that old game,? with the PlayStation version of the game.

Myst released today for the 3DS, and while it is very important in the history of the advancement of video game design, it?s basically a game where you are clicking pre-rendered images. It begs the questions, why is this game 535 MB large for iOS devices. I don?t think that game took up that much disc space when it originally released for PC.

Prince of Persia
Appears on Apple II, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, PC, Sega Master System, Sega CD, TurboGrafx, NES, Game Boy, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy Color, and Wii (unlockable in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands) for a total of 13 ports.

There are 13 ports of Prince of Persia since it first released on the Apple II computer, and that is not including the numerous Prince of Persia games that dealt with the Sands of Time. Something about the way the original Prince moved with his rotoscoped animation technology just demanded that everyone be able to play the game no matter what interactive console they owned.

Out of This World
Amiga, Apple IIGS, Atari ST, PC, Sega Mega Drive, SNES, Mac OS, 3DO, Tapwave Zodiac, Mega-CD, Mobile phones, Windows Mobile, iOS, and Android for a total of 13 ports.

The appeal of Out of this World, strictly from the porting point of view, is that the game has a simple art style with impressive animation that is dripping with a timeless sense of style. I can?t imagine a day when Out of this World won?t offer an instantly inviting experience. Ghana President Mills dies, VP takes over

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana's President John Atta Mills, who won international praise for presiding over a stable model democracy in Africa, died suddenly on Tuesday and his vice-president was quickly sworn in to replace him at the helm of the oil, gold and cocoa producer.

Mills had celebrated his 68th birthday on Saturday and his unexpected death came months before he was due to stand for re-election in December as head of the world's No. 2 cocoa grower, which is also a major African gold producer.

"It is with a heavy heart ... that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," the president's office said. It added that Mills had died a few hours after being taken ill, but gave no further details.

A presidential aide, who asked not to be named, said the president had complained of pains on Monday evening and had died early on Tuesday afternoon when his condition worsened.

In line with Ghana's constitution, Vice-President John Dramani Mahama, who is 53, took the oath of office as head of state before a somber parliament hours after the announcement of Mills' death. Mahama will serve as caretaker president until the elections at the end of the year.

Analysts hailed this as a sign that the country's political institutions were solid and working smoothly.

"With Ghana's reputation for stability, having seen two peaceful transitions in government following elections in 2000 and 2008, the strength of Ghana's institutions are likely to see the country in good stead," said Razia Khan, head of Africa research at Standard Chartered.

"As such, market volatility related to near-term uncertainty is likely to be limited," she added.

Amid swirling rumors about his ill health, Mills had returned from medical checks in the United States a few weeks ago. Some reports by local newspapers speculated he had throat cancer, other reports mentioned a sinus-related affliction.

Ghana's election commission said December's presidential and parliamentary elections would go ahead as planned.

OBAMA PAYS TRIBUTE

Some analysts questioned whether Mills' death might open up a presidential candidacy battle inside the ruling National Democratic Congress party before the elections. The party will hold an emergency congress to elect a new presidential candidate to contest the vote.

"Elections will have to be held soon and one does not know what the new president will decide, in particular in terms of resource nationalism. Elections are always a factor of instability in Africa," said Martin Bauwens, managing director of Johannesburg-based mine consultancy MJB Consulting.

Producers in Africa's second largest gold producer have raised concerns about government moves to raise the corporate mining tax to 35 percent from 25 percent and to introduce a 10 percent windfall tax as well.

Ghana's state and private radio and TV channels suspended regular programming and played patriotic songs between messages of condolence, urging Ghanaians to unite in a time of grief.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who had received Mills in the Oval Office in March and praised him and his country as "a good-news story" in Africa, also sent his condolences.

"He helped promote economic growth in Ghana in the midst of challenging global circumstances and strengthened Ghana's strong tradition of democracy ... He was also a strong advocate for human rights and for the fair treatment of all Ghanaians," Obama said in a statement from the White House.

Trained as a lawyer and taxation expert, Mills had overseen Ghana's emergence as one of Africa's newest oil producers two years ago, earning respect at home and abroad for his economic policies and commitment to democracy and good governance.

Ghana has seen democratic elections decide its leadership no fewer than four times since the last military coup in 1981, a rare feat in a region where power is still just as often determined by the bullet as by the ballot.

The new caretaker president, Mahama, has just published a book entitled "My First Coup d'Etat: And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa", a memoir of his early years in the often turbulent events that followed Ghana's 1957 independence from Britain.
