Railroad Stocks Look Attractive at Current Prices | How to Create ...

Contrary to the demise of coal usage, the railroad stocks are not dead yet.? The road and rail industry has trailed the S&P 500 in performance throughout 2012.? However, my analysis indicates that the rail stocks are undervalued and should be considered as a buy.? Last week, Goldman Sachs issued this report:

Goldman Sachs resumed coverage of the U.S. transportation sector with an attractive coverage view on railroads. ??Canadian Pacific Railway?(CP) was a top buy idea and made it to the conviction list. Goldman gave a buy rating to CSX Corp.?(CSX) and Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC).? The U.S. transportation industry still has room to raise rates further to recoup years of economic losses, said in a note.

I am in disagreement with Goldman on CP.? While CP is a good company, it is priced to high with a PE of 18 for a growth rate of 10%.? CP has a 5-year average PE of 14 which is comparable to the current industry average of 13.78.? If you like CP, wait for a pullback in price before entering.

My favorite rail stocks at this time are Norfolk Southern (NSC) and CSX Corp (CSX).? They both trade at a PE of around 12 which is lower than the industry average of 13.78.? NSC is trading at $72.25.? Medium-term trends in the majority of NSC?s markets remain favorable and support rising traffic, in our opinion. We see investments in its network improving capacity on heavily trafficked lanes like the Heartland and Crescent corridors, and leading to greater conversion of truck traffic over to rail.? Coal shipments will be down but the growth in other areas will overshadow its impact.? NSC has a 3-5 year projected growth rate of 13.8%.? NSC has a current dividend yield of 2.58% which compounds at 16.4% annually.? Looking forward 10 years, NSC will have a yield on cost of 11.9%.? NSC has an equity summary score of 9.0 out of 10 for a Bullish outlook.

CSX is trading at $21.89 with a one year price performance of -12.2%.? We believe CSX will benefit from economic recovery in the U.S., given its role in transporting many of the basic materials required in manufacturing and construction. We also think the recession forced a more intense focus on operating efficiencies, which should support wider margins during a period of rising volumes. CSX has a 3-5 year projected growth rate of 12.5%.? CSX has a current dividend yield of 2.50% which compounds at 15% annually.? Looking forward 10 years, CSX will have a yield on cost of 9.9%.? CSX has an equity summary score of 7.5 out of 10 for a Bullish outlook.

Union Pacific (UNP) is a little more expensive at a PE of 14 but it also has an EPS growth rate of 15%.? We believe UNP?s new traffic, especially shale-oil related, is coming on at higher prices than we had previously anticipated. On this, and slightly improved coal volumes, we are boosting our EPS estimate for ?12 by $0.24 to $8.19 and ?13?s by $0.22 to $9.02. We note that UNP posted Q2 EPS of $2.10, vs. $1.59, exceeding our estimate and the Capital IQ consensus, both of which were $1.96.? UNP is trading at $117.37 with a dividend yield of 2.01%.? Looking forward 10 years, UNP will have a yield on cost of 7.9%.? UNP has an equity summary score of 9.3 out of 10 for a VERY Bullish outlook.

List Building Done The Right Way : Internet Businesses Online

You are here: Home / General / List Building Done The Right Way

Have an email list? Would you like to know how you can grow your subscriber base? If that describes you, then you have arrived at the right place, at the right time. Ok, well before we go into exactly how list building is done, we want to discuss an overview of the process. If you?re brand new, list building is all about basically people, your site readers, allowing you to send them marketing and promotional emails. Obviously this is not about engaging in spamming or scraping emails from all over the web. No, what we?re talking about here is opt-in list building, where your subscribers actually opt-in to your list and ask you to send them interesting email. Maybe an obvious point but it is extremely important; your ability to make money and last in your IM business rests squarely on how you put it all together and make it work for you.

You can choose any technique to illustrate this, like Traffic Blackbook, and that is just a, for instance. Just about all methods are easy to do, but just look at the huge swings that have existed for so long.

The mistake that is usually made happens when a person looks at the method and thinks all that is needed is to copy it or use it based on what they have read. Everything you will ever do in business does not exist in isolation and draws from different directions.

All the greatest business people on the net who started small eventually realized how critical testing all those small parts are for getting the greatest conversions.

While you will never want to annoy your list with too frequent contacts, with a properly developed list you can rest assured that you can send them offers that will convert for you. Things have changed over the many years, and there is much more competition for the attention of the people on your list, and that is why it?s so much more important to cultivate a great relationship with your subscribers. When people want information they?re generally searching for answers to questions or solutions to problems. Given below are a few list building tips that will help you start creating your own list of subscribers and add new ones to your existing list.

If you want a simple way to build your list, you could start by offering to do ad swaps with other marketers who have lists. You can start by doing a search for other marketers in your niche who publish ezines or newsletters. Make sure you create contact with these publishers and let them know that you would like to swap ads with them. If you don?t yet have a good sized list, however, you may have trouble getting anyone to work with you on this.

This can be a very effective technique, though, as you?re leveraging the power of other peoples? lists. From one ad, you could get a large number of targeted visitors, many who are likely to fill out your opt-in form. All web based businesses have certain characteristics that arise solely because it is the internet. You need to look at the short history to really gain a clear understanding of what we are talking about. You need to be prepared as much as you can be so if something does suddenly impact your business you can respond quickly. As you continue reading on the subject of Internet Marketing, do you think that is something that will mesh well with your business or could add to it? It is much better to realize that there could be problems later on and maybe either hold off or decide against using it.

However, there will be times when you just have to be bold, and also remember that just about everything in business has an element of risk with it.

If you take the time to really develop a great relationship with your list, then you can enlist their help. Well, it?s kind of simple if you can pull it off, and basically we want people telling their friends about you. So just politely ask your list for help, and then ask them to do one thing to tell others about you, your business, your list, etc. You can have success with this tactic, but as we said all your stuff needs to be in one sock on this one. We hope you will use these email list building tips because they have been proven to work by thousands of IM marketers. If you really want to see your online business going to the next level, and truly have the qualities of a strong business, then there?s absolutely no looking back. Lots of marketing methods are evergreen and Affiliate Marketing is one of them, but there is a reason some of those methods have worked so well over the years. There is never anything wrong with testing out something you have just read about, and very often you will discover that you have been overlooking something potentially profitable. If all three of them look like a good fit for what you are doing, then perhaps choose the one that seems to hold the best promise. Remember the value of testing, and you can always test and determine results and make a call based on that. Right now, if you are a beginner, then you do not have all you need to start because we did not give it to you ? not enough room to do that. After you feel you have enough info to try it out, then you know what needs to be done. This is what forward-thinking business is all about, and that is the only way you can grow and expand.

Ospreys In Japan Raise New Tempers Against US Military

Japan wants no part of America's "wonder plane," the V-22 Osprey.

An aircraft that can transform between a long-distance turboprop transport and a medium lift helicopter -- known as a tilt rotor -- the Osprey has long been pinpointed by the U.S. military as a major 21st-century replacement for its aging fleet of decades-old helicopters.

Opinion of U.S. troops rose in Japan last year after the Fukushima disaster. The dedication and professionalism of U.S. forces providing disaster assistance made a deep impression on the Japanese public, especially when compared to the lackluster performance of their own government.

But the Monday arrival of a dozen V-22s at a U.S. airbase in Iwakuni, on the western tip of Japan's main island of Honshu, sparked widespread opposition and anger, both from the public and the Japanese defense ministry. Activists gathered in about a dozen small boats to protest the temporary stationing of the aircraft in Iwakuni.

Although the Ospreys have already been unloaded from ships and assembled, their final destination is expected to be the ever-controversial Futenma Marine air base in southern Okinawa. Demonstrations from groups opposing the U.S. presence and the Osprey took place outside Futenma on Monday.

A history of aircraft crashes, long resistance to U.S. basing and military friction with civilians, and staunch opposition from local governments, particularly focused on Okinawa, has created major disagreements between Tokyo and Washington over the status of U.S. forces deployed to Japan.

Futenma air base is located in a densely populated urban zone. In 2004, a CH-53 Sea Stallion (a heavy helicopter) crash-landed into an Okinawa International University building nearby, luckily resulting in no deaths. A string of accidents to the V-22, which entered service in 2007, has raised fears that similar incidents could occur again.

Last Friday, Japan's Vice Defense Minister Shu Watanabe told reporters, "If the U.S. forces the issue, it could become a long-term problem affecting the good relations between us."

Earlier In July, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the Japanese press, "We will work closely with our Japanese partners to ensure that any American military equipment brought into Japan will meet the highest safety standards."

The U.S. has maintained that switching to the Osprey will improve the safety and performance of its aircraft. After all, the CH-46 Sea King helicopters it is replacing are from the 1960s.The current group of 12 Ospreys are meant to partially replace 24 aging Sea Kings slated for decommissioning.

Local Okinawan politicians point to Osprey crashes in April in Morocco (injuring five) and in June in Florida (killing two) as examples of the plane's continued troubles.

The U.S. military says that the Osprey has already logged 150,000 flight hours. For every 100,000 flight hours, there are fewer than two accidents, far below the average of almost 2.5 for other Marines aircraft.

'Vital' To The Asia-Pacific?

The U.S. Embassy in Japan released a press statement on Monday, calling the V-22's arrival in Futenma a necessary and "vital component in fulfilling the United States' commitment to provide for the defense of Japan and to help maintain peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region."

That hasn't assuaged the Japanese public's concerns about the plane, or the nature of living so close to U.S. bases on cramped Okinawa.

The 1995 rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by three U.S. service members outside Futenma sparked widespread anger and resentment. A year later, Japan and the U.S. agreed that the airbase would be closed down and moved to Henoko Bay, farther north on the island.

However, concerns about the economic costs and damages to the pristine local environment have delayed the actual relocation. Many Okinawans, fed up with the U.S. forces, which they blame for higher crime and greater safety risks, think they should be sent overseas or to another area of the country entirely.

As of late March 2011, 19,000 of America's 34,221 total active duty troops in Japan were Marines located on various bases on Okinawa. Both governments have agreed to moving 9,000 of those soldiers to other locations (5,000 to Guam and 4,000 to other bases in the Pacific), but no firm date has been set. The cost of moving them and building new bases elsewhere will be some $8.6 billion, $3.1 billion of which will be paid by the Japanese government.

Okinawa was independent from Japan until 1871, as the Ryukyu kingdom historically had a distinct culture and language. In the years after World War 2, local populations have grown to resent the pressure and burden placed on them from Tokyo's acquiescence to the island becoming the major staging area for U.S. forces in the country.

As for the Osprey itself, the new plane has the potential to improve the training and capabilities of U.S. troops in Japan. First flown in 1989, co-developed and built by Bell and Boeing, the Osprey suffered from years of test troubles and rising costs, not unlike many other aircraft bought by the Pentagon. Since initial test flights, the plane has suffered seven crashes, resulting in 36 deaths. The Pentagon is adamant in arguing that the plane's safety standards have improved dramatically with design changes and additional adjustments, as shown by its excellent performance in Iraq and Afghanistan in past years. The craft does have an impressive range of 2,300 miles and moves at speeds around 300 miles an hour, outperforming normal helicopters and allowing U.S. forces to travel farther along the Japanese coastline and the Western Pacific's long maritime distances.

The V-22 has cost approximately $27 billion to develop, and procurement costs will likely amount to another $27 billion. One hundred and sixty have been built so far, but the Marines themselves are expected to need some 360. But even if the craft is gaining infamy in Japan, there are reports that it has already overcome its poor starting reputation, receiving interest from Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Canada.?

The Okinawan island chain's strategic location, flanking China's coastline to the east, along with its vicinity to larger Japanese islands and the Korean Peninsula, makes it a pivotal strategic location in the Western Pacific for U.S. forces. That means the total removal of U.S. forces from the area is a near impossibility, even if absolute numbers are set to decrease.

The recent incident is revealing major differences in the U.S.-Japan defense pact, even as the two look to work together to deal with China's rising military power. Japan after all, maintains that the Senkaku Islands, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands, are administered as part of the Okinawa government.

Kent Calder, a Japan expert at Johns Hopkins University, told the Wall Street Journal on Monday that the tensions between Japan and the U.S. over the Osprey jeopardize some of the "quiet progress" made on other defense issues.

"U.S. forces in Japan will refrain from any flight operations in Japan until the results of investigations into recent incidents in Morocco and Florida are presented to the government of Japan and the safety of MV-22 flight operations is reconfirmed. This information is expected to be presented to the government of Japan in August," said a U.S. Embassy statement from July 23, using the Osprey's designation in Marine service. ??

New lab working on security shoe sole to ID people

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? High-tech security? Forget those irksome digital eye scans. Meet the biometric shoe.

A new lab is working to perfect special shoe insoles that can help monitor access to high-security areas, like nuclear power plants or special military bases.

The concept is based on research that shows each person has unique feet, and ways of walking. Sensors in the bio-soles check the pressure of feet, monitor gait, and use a microcomputer to compare the patterns to a master file for that person. If the patterns match the bio-soles go to sleep. If they don't, a wireless alarm message can go out.

"It's part of a shoe that you don't have to think about," said Marios Savvides, head of Carnegie Mellon University's new Pedo-Biometrics Lab, in Pittsburgh.

The lab, which has $1.5 million in startup funding, is a partnership with Autonomous ID, a Canadian company that is relocating to several U.S. cities. Todd Gray, the company president, said he saw the potential when his daughter was in a maternity ward decorated with representations of different baby feet all along a wall.

Autonomous ID has been working on prototypes since 2009, with the goal of making a relatively low cost ID system. Gray said they've already run tests on sample bio-soles, which are no thicker than a common foot pad sold in pharmacies, and achieved an accuracy rate of more than 99 percent. He said Carnegie Mellon will broaden the tests to include "a full spectrum of society: big, tall, thin, heavy, athletic, multicultural, on a diet, twins and so on."

Gray wouldn't speculate on what the system will cost or when it might reach the marketplace, but each worker at a site would have his or her own pair of bio-soles.

"Within the third step, it knows it's you, and it goes back to sleep," he said. "If I put on yours, it would know almost instantly that I'm not you."

The idea may seem far-fetched, but scientists have known for centuries that individuals have unique ways of walking, and in recent years the U.S. Department of Defense has been funding millions of dollars of gait research, as has the Chinese government.

The Institute of Intelligent Machines is doing extensive research into gait biometrics, including reports of systems where a floor monitors footsteps without people's knowledge.

One expert who is not connected with the CMU lab said the biometric sole seems promising.

"I must admit I find this news very exciting," said John DiMaggio, an Oregon podiatrist who has worked with law enforcement to use foot information in forensic investigations. While it is too early to fully judge the CMU research plan, DiMaggio said using feet as a biometric identification source makes sense.

While researchers have noted that gait can vary with injuries, fatigue and other factors, Savvides said the bio-soles can detect signs of those things, too.

The bio-soles might also have medical uses. Several papers presented this month at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Vancouver suggest changes in how elderly people walk ? such as a slowing pace or variable stride ? can provide early warnings of dementia.

Gray said the technology is less invasive of privacy than eye scans and other biometrics, in part because the individual data stays inside the bio-soles.

But one group that has followed biometrics and privacy issues said there could still be problems.

"Any biometric capture device is a potential tracking device, just like every iPhone is a potential tracking device. That's just the way these things are," said Lee Tien, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco nonprofit that monitors free speech and privacy issues.

Tien said that the bio-soles themselves "might make a person feel a little bit better" than other security systems and that Gray's claim that the system can ID a person within three steps is "pretty impressive."

But he added that if the project is successful, bio-soles could also be implanted in shoes secretly.

"I wouldn't expect Nike to build these in. But it's potentially covert," he said, meaning it could be used to help spy on people.

annual travel insurance

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a family annual travel policy.
I had a bad experience one year, not that bad, but it appeared that I wasn't insured. The policy number did not relate to anything, was sort of a default number.
Luckily we didn't need to claim. The policy was backed by AXA.

Anyway.. recommendations please
