Tips Before Baby Arrives | Bakersfield Mom

The arrival of a baby can be exciting, especially if this is your first child. Preparing for a new?member of the family can be a fun activity if done in advance. Nine months of pregnancy is?plenty of time for adequate preparations to be made and spreading them out over the entire?term will make them more manageable. Here are some tips to consider getting yourself, your?family and your home ready.?

Family Fun
Involve everyone in the family for the arrival of the baby. If this baby is not your first, you can?begin by preparing the other siblings for a new sister or brother. You can tell them gently that?they should expect a new member of the family. The baby needs love and that it would be fun?for all of you to do things together. Involve them in the fun and creative aspects of getting ready,?like helping to set up and decorate the nursery. Ask them about their feelings on a new sibling?and help them get excited by feeling your stomach as it grows and the baby kicks.

Putting Together a Nursery
The step of getting your home ready by preparing a room or space dedicated to baby can be a?very fun one; picking out a new paint color, choosing a theme and bedding can all be a creative?outlet and break from all of the medical considerations a pregnancy entails. Consider choosing?furniture that will transition with your child as they grow up and not buy something that will only?last a few years while they?re young. A safe bed to sleep in, a changing table, dresser and?rocker are generally the pieces that make up a nursery. Get help with setting up or moving any?furniture so you don?t overexert yourself.

Go Shopping
Many mothers get a bit overwhelmed thinking that baby needs a lot of things to be taken care?of. Babies generally need just many of a few items; a safe place to sleep, diapers, wipes, and?basic clothing like onesies are the most needed items in their first months. Spreading your?shopping out over your entire term will help you budget better and catch sales on items as they?come up. If you?re planning on having a baby shower, register at a baby store and hold off on?too much shopping until you?ll know what you need that you didn?t receive as a gift.

Birth Arrangement
Before the big delivery day, you may want to discuss with your doctor the intricacies of the birth?process. You need to know which method you prefer to go through and the kind of medication?that you may be given to help the pain subside. If you are allergic to any substance, this is the?time to consult your health care provider and work around alternatives. You may also ask to visit?the facility to familiarize yourself with your environment before the big day. This will help you?calm your nerves.

Cord Blood Banking
Cord blood banking refers to the collection of blood from the umbilical cord just after the baby?has been born. The stem cells found in cord blood can potentially be used in the future to help?treat certain diseases. The cord blood is stored in a private facility until the need for it arises.?This process needs to be planned for in advance, so be sure to speak with a cord blood bank?and your doctor early on.
